Guest mikew5th
http://www.google.com/phone http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2010/01/google_releases_its_nexus_one.html?sc=fb&cc=fp from npr: At a press conference in Mountain View, Calif., Google just unveiled its much-ballyhooed iPhone killer, the Nexus One. A number of the major tech sites live-blogged the event, including CNET, Engadget and Gizmodo, plus you had the requisite tweet storm from countless people following the rollout. In case you missed it in real time, though, here are some of the basics about the new Google phone. A screenshot from Google's Nexus One home page. The phone will set you back $179 if you buy it with a two-year T-Mobile contract, or $529 without any service. (Screenshot / NPR) At the conference, Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management at Google, described the Nexus One as a "super phone" based on an open platform (Android) with an open marketplace (the Android Market) - in direct contrast to the iPhone. In another comment indirectly targeting Apple, Queiroz noted how it supports "always-on applications to be running in the background." Regarding tech specs, the Nexus One features a 1 GHz processor, 4 gig Micro SD card, a 3.7 inch display and an LED trackball that will pulse for email and phone notifications. Under the hood you'll also find a compass, GPS, accelerometer, light sensor and proximity sensor. Additionally, they've managed to include active noise cancellation technology - a first for an Android-powered phone - and a five megapixel camera that shoots photos and video, putting it in line with Nokia N-series phones and ahead of the iPhone's 3 megapixel camera. The Nexus One is also running the latest version of the Android operating system, which has gotten some new tricks up its sleeve since the recent Droid rollout. Its voice recognition tool now offers speech-to-text conversion for any type of text field, such as Gmail emails. They've also added a new feature called "live wallpaper" that allows you to run dynamic animations in the background of your home screen, such as a frequency spectrum of the music you're playing, or a pond you can "ripple" with your finger. Google also rolled out a Web store for the phone, allowing you to purchase the phone directly from them, rather then requiring customers to purchase it through a phone provider's Web site. The phone will set you back $179 if you buy it with a two-year T-Mobile contract, or $529 without any service. Verizon and Vodaphone are also on board for later this spring, though pricing information hasn't been released yet. No doubt we'll see countless reviews of the device, but one of the first ones to come out of the gate is courtesy of Techcrunch's Michael Arringon, who gives it a big thumb's up: I've been using the Nexus One with TMobile since mid-December as my primary mobile phone. This is the best Android powered phone to date. It's also the fastest and most elegant smartphone on the market today, solidly beating the iPhone in most ways. In this rapidly evolving market there is sure to be something better just around the corner. But if you are looking to buy a high end smartphone right now, this is the phone for you. The Nexus One is the Android signature device. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/52173-google-nexus-one/ Share on other sites
hexagon son
nah, it'll never beat the iPhone. i can see it being a very good alternative though. it's just like the iPod isnt the best mp3 player out there, but people still seem to want it for some reason. i use a mac so i'm stuck with it regardless. Joyrex
And, as of right now, existing T-Mobile customers are not eligible for the 179.00 price tag of the Nexus One, nor are upgrade users. I'm sure it's just an oversight on Google's part, but if it holds to be true, that's really shitty. Also, the estate of Philip K. Dick is suing Google for the "Nexus" term (since Google admits they named it Nexus One after the novel featuring the Nexus Six Replicant in Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep?, and named their OS Android. plstik
sooo anyone got one yet? heard it has some issues with connecting to 3g, but overall looks fine. Been thinking of buying one as soon as its released in germany. Compared to an iPhone its rather cheap and I'd be able to get an internet flat for 8€/month (umts/hsdpa is limited to ~200mb monthly usage). goDel
There's a good review of the nexus at Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3632/anands-google-nexus-one-review Quote It's really all about functionality. Google offers more out of the box, making the Nexus One more like a computing device and less like just a smartphone. I suspect that many will prefer that, while others will still not be swayed if they value a cleaner, more focused interface. Just like there are Mac users and PC users, there are iPhone users and Android users. It's not that Android is an iPhone alternative, it's that Android is a completely different approach to what Apple offers. On paper, Android and the Nexus One offer all of the value. You get more out of the box, you get features like Google Navigation, Google Voice and you get a platform that can do pretty much anything you'd want. Honestly, on paper, the iPhone is a tough sell. It's got slower hardware, less flexibility and you have to pay extra for what Google will give you for free. It's actually very similar to the Windows Mobile vs. iPhone debates from 3 years ago. What sold folks then was Apple's UI advantage, and Android is no slouch in that department. Many of the same value/openness arguments are made against buying Mac computers over PCs. Ultimately what sways users is how much they appreciate Apple's way of doing things. Clearly not everyone does, but I suspect that there are enough who do to keep the iPhone strong despite Google's serious lead in functionality/bang for your buck. These two platforms are very polarizing. I have friends who would clearly not work well with an iPhone and others who wouldn't enjoy the Nexus One. It really boils down to what you value most as there's no clear cut answer for everyone. Personally, there are things I love about the Nexus One, and things that I still prefer on the iPhone. If Google or Apple would just copy and improve upon the Pre it would be a much easier decision for me :) Going forward, Google will have to reign in some of what makes Android so flexible today to avoid it turning into another Windows Mobile. And Apple will have to embrace some of what Google is doing to prevent iPhone from turning into what Apple's products were in the 1990s. Guest Glass Plate
it only costs 25$ to get a developer's license for Android, (compared to the 99$ for Iphone/iPad). They already have all the important apps iPhone has, and is expected to dwarf them in apps really soon. (pretty sure the figures on total apps on Joyrex's post is wrong for that) Also a reminder the 4 gig storage on Nexus One is modular.
