every clip I've seen of this movie looks completely retarded.

As much as I enjoyed going to see Avatar, I think it will be as forgotten as the Final Fantasy movie within a year. I also think the new 3D will remain a niche thing.

i really doubt that 3D will be a niche thing. a bunch of big name directors are going to use it in their upcoming films, spielberg, jackson, ridley scott and more. i could see the studios also embracing this as now they can get asses in the cinema seats by offering something that's not possible in home cinema (yet). the cameron way of using the 3D as a tool for immersion will be more common than the gimmicky jump in your face shit. i could see it be used as a narrative tool. it's hard to say if 3D will be as paradigm shifting as filming in color was, but don't see it as a simply niche thing either.

well, I agree with all of that. By niche I meant it won't be popular outside action films. And even then, once the novelty wears off, will people really want to pay extra for it? I think there's got to be diminishing returns; the price of tickets is already high for most folks.

i thought like, most of the people who did like avatar at least agreed that it was the special effects they liked.

Uh it's now projected to do over SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS in the North American market. It won't be "forgotten", wtf are you smoking dude.

ok dude...I'm sure the Star Wars prequels did great business too. People are seeing it for the buzz and the novelty factor of the 3D glasses, in the same way that they flocked to Condemned on the XBOX 360 because it was one of the first big games out on that console. Only time will tell if it's really a "beloved classic" or not. I think it's similar to Titanic in that while it did huge business, when people are listing off Cameron's best films they don't usually mention it near the top, as they do with Aliens, T2, etc.

It really is baffling this wins a best pictures award. A movie without memorable story, characters or scenes.

Yes, the special effects and the commercial success will be remembered. I doubt those new age smurfs are going to have much of a pop cultural impact like star wars or even titanic had.

I found the 3D effect anything but mind blowing and those 3D glasses were really uncomfortable too. Afterward I walked around with pinch marks on my nose for a couple of hours. I probably didn't see it at cinema with a proper 3d setup with the right amount of mind altering substances.

LOL people won't pay more for 3d , Avatar is about to make more money then any other movie ever. The big studios are on board, it's no longer even a question. 3D displays will be here in good time (laptops and phones too) , do you prefer listening to mono music are your 5.1

look, are you going to want to pay extra money to watch "500 days of summer" in 3D? I thought not. It will only be used for action blockbusters, just like the original 3D. At the end of the day, it is a gimmick. Until they can do it without the glasses.
