Guest beatfanatic
Ok so I am a noob when it comes to computers. I have a 300 GB HD connected to my computer through a USB cable. I am running Windows XP and everytime I turn on my HD (whenever I start my computer), the HD will start to autoplay and will keep doing so every 5-10 minutes. It cant be good for my HD cant it?? I even went to Properties - Autoplay - Take no action to turn off autoplay but it seems like it totally ignores that. please help. Guest leprechaun
Disconnect your hard drive and only plug it in when you need it? Thats not a good option for me since my computer is in a really cramped space and it would be a hassle to plug my HD everytime I need it which is all the time because all my music is stored on there. Guest pulsewarrior
use tweakui or http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/disable-autoplay-of-audio-cds-and-usb-drives/ :) Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/52633-my-external-hardrive-keeps-autoplaying/#findComment-1217834 Share on other sites
Guest beatfanatic
I grabbed tweakUI but it essentially told me to go to Properties - Autoplay - Take no action. But it did not work. I will try the second option. thanks Edited January 20, 2010 by beatfanatic Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/52633-my-external-hardrive-keeps-autoplaying/#findComment-1217851 Share on other sites

Guest pulsewarrior
From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715 For operating systems that do not include Gpedit.msc, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK. 2. Locate and then click the following entry in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutorun 3. Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify. 4. In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the "How to selectively disable specific Autorun features" section. 5. Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor. 6. Restart the computer. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/52633-my-external-hardrive-keeps-autoplaying/#findComment-1217876 Share on other sites
Alzado
This is a known error that Micro$oft could easily release a fix for if it gave a shit about its users. Try this: 1. Defrag the connected USB drive. 2. Restart your computer. 3. Double click on Control Panel > Device Manager 4. Select 'Cancel' 5. Restart your computer. 6. Unplug your USB device. 7. Restart your computer. 8. Reconnect your USB device. 9. Restart your computer. 10. Click on Accessories > Command Prompt 11. Type: "C:/autoplay_disable/computers" and hit enter (you will receive an error message) 12. Restart your computer. 13. Restart computer one more time. 14. Click Add Printers, do not add printer 15. Restart your computer. Alzado
the worst thing about firewire is the excessive heat it gives off. I've clocked them at much faster transfer rates than USB 98, but you need to house the cable in a flame retardant casing. otherwise WD makes some quality drives that require, on average, 4 or 5 fewer reboots per storage sector than the shit that Atari is manufacturing.
