dennis hopper

he has inoperable, terminal prostate cancer and is not going to be around for very long so i think an appreciation thread is in order. ive always loved his manic, crazy intensity. blue velvet and easy rider are probably what hes best known for but hes been in so many films its insane. he also directed the near masterpiece 'out of the blue', a film thats incredibly under appreciated. a great actor and director whos stature in film history will only grow with time.

ive never seen that one mostly due to an illogical aversion to all things wim wenders. but i loved paris, texas and i love hopper so thats going on the top of my list of things to check out.

i also really want to see 'the last movie'

The Last Movie was a long-time pet project of Hopper and writer Stewart Stern. (Stern had written Rebel Without a Cause, in which Hopper played a small role.) After developing the script in the early 1960s, Hopper tried for years to secure financing for the film, intending it to be his directorial debut. Given free rein on a budget of $1 million from Universal, Hopper spent much of 1970 in Peru shooting the film under the working title Chinchero, bringing many of his actor and musician friends to Peru, including singer Kris Kristofferson and director Samuel Fuller. With hours and hours of footage, Hopper holed up in his home editing studio in Taos, New Mexico, but failed to deliver a cut by the end of 1970. Hopper was in a period of severe alcohol and drug abuse (as shown in an extremely rare and barely released documentary called The American Dreamer, which was directed by Lawrence Schiller), but managed to put together a fairly straightforward cut in terms of conventional storytelling. He was mocked over it by his friend, cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who urged him to edit the film unconventionally and attempt to break new cinematic ground, which caused Hopper to destroy that edit and craft the more disjointed narrative that is known today, and he finally completed that final edit in the spring of 1971.

There was a Dennis Hopper film that ludd recommended ages ago. I remember that I hadn't seen it, but I don't remember the name of it?

There was an interesting twilight zone that he starred in. Was reAlly fascinating. Sad day:(

If you can, hunt down "Human Highway". It's a feature that Neil Young directed. Dennis Hopper is in it and plays a short order cook. Crazy shit. I can bet you he wasn't very proud of his performance in it. By the looks of it, he was fucked out of his skull durring production.

Every second of his screen time in Blue Velvet is mindblowing.

neil young directed a movie? was it good? im sure if it was before 85 hopper was out of his mind. if you have the time check out that doc i posted. some of the stories he tells of how bad he actually got are insane.. wandering through mexico naked, alone, out of his mind from various drugs.. it amazing this guy made it to 73

"Human Highway is a 1982 comedy film starring and co-directed by Neil Young under his pseudonym Bernard Shakey. Dean Stockwell co-directed the film and acted along with Russ Tamblyn, Dennis Hopper, and the post-punk and new wave band Devo. Included is an unusual collaborative performance of "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" by Devo and Neil Young with Booji Boy singing lead vocals and Young playing lead guitar.

The film was shown in only select theaters and was not released on VHS until 1995. It received poor reviews upon its premiere[1] and with the benefit of hindsight has received favorable reviews more recently."

It was never released on DVD in the US, hence, I had to get a VHS copy.

It's definitely worth seeing. There are clips on YouTube. Dennis Hopper is a trip. He is soo gone in it. I don't remember him having any truly inteligable lines.
