Purchasing albums (CDs/vinyls/mp3s/etc)

Hey all,

I am sort of new to this music scene and I realised that my local HMV has literally nothing on IDM and most electronic music. I am basically asking where is a good place to purchase music for a guy who is from Canada? And when I say music, I mean albums and mp3s from IDM/electronic artists.

If this is not the proper forum for this thread could someone move it? I wasn't sure if this was general banter or of its music related - because it is sort of both lol...

Thanks for your help guys (and girls!)

Henry

I enjoy purchasing albums directly from the artist or label. You usually get more personal service plus sometimes hand-made packaging or limited run stuff, which is always fun. Sometimes their websites will tell you if they are available in local shops anywhere. If it's not available through the artist or label, I go to Amazon.com!

As for discovering new artists, this forum is a great start. You just have to do a little research or follow links to arrive at a website where you can purchase. Someone also recently recommended Project168 that features tons of IDM and undground electronic stuff in the same vein. I have also utilized Pandora internet radio, SOMA.fm, to find artists with a similar style to other ones I like then I search to find their site, label's site, or elsewhere to buy online.

Happy hunting and good luck.

For CDs I usually do Amazon, Half.com, Wherehouse.com, or eBay.com unless I buy something directly from the artist or label. But I try to buy used as much as I can because I have a large appetite and a smaller budget.

For MP3s, there's Bleep.com, Amazon.com, and also eMusic.com which works with a credit system, and they have a lot of independent label stuff.

Not sure if any of this is cost-effective in Canada.

If you can't order from the labels themselves, I guess Amazon or Bleep. Boomkat.com is great for discovering new artists/one's you haven't heard of yet (UK site).
