"Song of the Youth" by Stockhausen

I listened to this song a lot at one point . . at first I thought it was aggressive and almost malicious in its disjointedness. As I listened to it more I felt that the fragmentary nature of the piece is biographical, flashes of youth (school bells, children talking) flicking as though touched on by memory. When I listen to it most openly that is what I feel - a benevolent, exploratory jubilance, scattered and joyful.

was the point of this post to let the board know that you are aware of Stockhausen?

oh, i have some stockhausen on vinyl.

HOW IDM IS THAT?

Edited by bigs

i read this interview before i knew who stockhausen was, and I was like "who is this pretentious git"

and then I grew more wise later, and I read it again, and I was then like "oh, wait"

ive never been able to get into stockhausen. im a massive fan of contemporary music, but it has to have emotion. intellectual and mathematical excersizes in composition dont resonate with me.

i know... i just said that im not into that style of composition. and if you listen to ligeti, messiaen, bartok, xennakis, ives, they are pushing conceptual boundaries just as much (although not in electronics) , but also their music oozes passion and feeling.

Like so much of mid-20th Century art of all kinds, it's about concept, rather than execution. And should be judged on concept. To do otherwise, I think, is to miss the point.

that sounds like a total cop-out.

stockhausen made so much early work via purely electronic means at a time when there really was not a whole lot of music like this, so the execution was central to the experience of composing and listening to his work. by doing this he was intentionally throwing out vast portions of what was considered acceptable ways of executing european art music, or any kind of music really.

stockhausen wasn't interested in "oozing passion and feeling," at least not like the composers messiaen mentioned. he seemed focused mainly on the profound and transformative capabilities of sound in itself and his works create conditions in which one can experience this power directly, as though without the trappings of musical tradition. to achieve this he certainly adhered to a rather austere "stockhausianism" (ie, stockhausen as a sort of messiah opening up new, unheard of realms of sound, creating a new musical language) and lots of his music can be really harsh and cold. but i've always thought this was a kind of trial by fire. but the fire is of central importance, one must get burned by stockhausen's music, not just the conceptual framework.

i'd say the execution is extremely important and to ignore this is, i think, missing the point. it may not be pretty but that is the point.

and anyway, works like Stimmung are both highly conceptual and beautifully executed.
