Yes indeed, he so much for Detroit hip-hop (and Hip-Hop in general!) Definitely gone before his time. Didn't plan it, but I've actually got two of his discs in the car right now.

yeah he was brilliant. but i'm pissed that he seems to be the target of so much hype and mimicry since his death. i can't get into flying lotus because he just sounds like a sketchier, less confident attempt at dilla's style [to me].

^^ I kinda feel the same way, especially with Lotus' earlier work with July Heat and Reset EP and the like. Going from Los Angeles, he seems to be finding more of his own sound, and not just a post-Dilla producer with scattered electronics everywhere. I'm interested to see where he goes with this 'space opera' business, it might be the best thing for him, getting away from that boom-bap genre

Yeah, there has been a lot of sketchy shit and cashing in going on following his passing, though from what little sense I can make of it, it seems like the shenanigans involving his 'estate' dicking over his family finally seem to be resolved.
