i has a droid

Recommended Posts

I've been using the same cellphone since 2002, a black and white one inch screen thing. So today I went out and got a droid aka milestone. Well, I just logged in to watmm via ssh and edited the html to make the forum link on watmm.com bigger.. from my phone. Yeah, web design on a phone, it's the god damn future.

yeah but i can gain superuser access to my phone without voiding my warranty ;)

but yeah, congrats on your step up to a more modern phone.

question for you: since you're used to having a phone that is literally "just a phone: nothing more", are you finding yourself still generally sticking to that rule, or are you using it for music/video playback etc?

i only ask because i've been messing around with 'smartphones' for quite a few years now, but have always had a separate music and video player. even my current handset is mainly just used as a communications device, even though it has 32GB onboard storage capacity.

what the hell is with their advertising?

so either

a) your phone is really heavy

b) your "apps" are huge filesizes

c) you have a lot of apps?

d) you need to fire your advertising agency

I'll wait until the battery lasts longer than 1-2 day

I doubt that will happen: for every increase in battery efficiency, they'll just upgrade the hardware and end up draining more power. I don't think they're interested in making the batteries last more than a day anymore. They're expecting their customers to sleep somewhere thats got electricity.

that's the phone i have now. apart from a few things (lack of IMAP IDLE support, Nokia's current merger of Maemo with Moblin) i'm happy with it.

i've had my droid since they first came out. after lusting towards the iphone for years, the droid definitely filled my phone appetite. the battery lasting a day (i use it frequently, including about 1.5 hours of streaming music via bluetooth a day) is a non-issue, especially considering once/if the battery shits out on me i can easily replace it myself...not to mention, i could always buy a seido battery for even longer battery life.

telus. $57/month, one year contract. it's not great, but I'm hoping it will pay for itself.

I never really used my old phone, except on rare occasions, hence not upgrading for the last 8 years. This new one is basically a pocket internet device that also happens to be a camera, gps, and phone.

that's the downside of the iPhone, if u don't remember to charge it ever fucking night you're screwed the next day. keeping an extra charger at work now just to juice it off my pc.

same, and at first i was a little jealous of the app selection on the iphone but most if not all the apps i want are on android market now.

I'm still using a phone that says Cingular on it. The keys are starting to get worn out, and the reception is pretty shit most of the time.

I really want to get a Nexus One, but I wouldn't even be able to afford the data plan for a smart phone. Le Sigh.

I've had a Blackberry Storm for about a year. At first it was a novelty and it was fun messing around with but now I pretty much just use its phone features, very occasionally Google Maps or the odd internet browse. I miss having a little piece of shit that had a week-long battery life, that I could throw across the room and not worry about it, and generally not be a liability I had to worry about losing or breaking. Might sell Blackberry, used ones still appear to go for over 100 quid on eBay.

Guest Deep Fried Everything

so i have an original droid, and realized that i needed to stop updating the applications about 3 months ago as it was getting slow as fuck and it's still slowly getting more and more un-useable by the day. now sometimes calls dont even come through, fucking lame.

is there anything besides overclocking that can speed this damned thing up? i understand overclocking kills battery time, which is already bad enough as is. yeah, yeah, this is a 2 year old phone (but one i've only had for about 1 year 4 months).. obsolescence and all that shit.

overclocking has virtually no effect on battery life in my experience. the droid will automatically drop down to a lower speed when you're not using it. and when you are using it, stuff happens faster, so it evens out. screen brightness will always be the biggest drain on battery life.
