question about LARGE monitors

i want to run REASON on a big monitor,

i was originally thinking i should get two monitors but that just is too bluky, so i want a large monitor (how big?) and then a good graphics card to run it (how fast?)

i wan to be able to run the Reason units and the step sequencer side by side without them touching.

depends on how big you want your sequencer. we use a 24", that worked fine for us when we used reason. you shouldn't need that nice of a gpu to run reason, not like those knobs are taking a lot of juice to render, you just want to have enough RAM and cpu power.

i have a fairly old machine (AMD Athalon 64 4200+, 3 gigs of ram, old radeon x800 gto) that runs reason 4 + live 8 just fine (98.36% of the time), so unless your tunes have several hundred devices reason should be a piece of cake. a bigger monitor doesn't increase the workload on a gpu unless you want a crazy big resolution.

Most (all?) projecters go up to 1024x768, which is horrible. OK for watching DVD's and playing games with a group of people, shit for everything else. You're much better of getting a big screen.

unless you throw down serious cash. just my own meandering thoughts about what I would want (who would use a projector for Reason? lol), of course it would be for movies and games, any other purpose for personal use would be pointless

I already have a 24" dell lcd, wouldn't mind a 30" as I do watch most movies on my pc, but for a college setting, 24 is fine

Well, consider that modern graphics cards are designed for games and that drawing some windows in 2D is about 1/500th as demanding as the average game.

If you have Vista or Win7, Windows will tap into that games accelerating power to draw its GUI, freeing up your CPU to make music.

If you have XP, a lot of the GUI drawing will still happen in the CPU. If your software is smart, it will divert the CPU power to the audio engine, so you'll get a flickery screen while a playback is happening.

Your average new PC will come with a GFX card that will be average for games i.e. totally sweet if you don't give a damn about games.

One thing you might want to think about is getting a card with two video outs so you have the option of adding another screen down ther track.

I am also pro this two screen business.

i love dual monitors. most video cards have 2 outs. a lot of dells are using dual dvi, which looks like a bunch of small pins -1. you can use 2 monitors off that 1 port if you have a dual dvi card.

i'd prefer having 2 cards though with 2 monitors. one sick one for high performance, other shitty pci card or something for the other monitor.

All these responses about size, dual monitors, etc. - what matters is what resolution whatever display you're using can handle, and what your video card can output.

Makes no fucking sense to have a 42" 720p monitor (which is 1366x768 pixel resolution, typically), if the app you're trying to run needs more real estate pixel-wise.

Dual monitors can help (in the case of web design or photoshop, you can have your browser on one monitor, your code on another, or your artwork on one monitor and all your palettes on the other) - but only if you can run both monitors at a decent resolution.

I have no idea what Reason's native resolution is, but simply increasing the resolution on your computer will give you more pixels to work with (it will make things smaller, so looking at a larger size monitor that CAN SUPPORT the higher resolution you want to run Reason at is what you really should be considering.

The new Apple LED displays, for instance, run at stupidly high resolutions, affording that your video card can output that high. Dell also has a new 24" monitor that runs at 2560x1680 or some obnoxiously high resolution - perfect for the stuff you're trying to do.

Using projectors for every day use is just too unrealistic because of the price to replace the bulbs that die out.

This is not true, there's plenty of affordable HD projectors available. And there are a lot of projectors that have a different native res than 1024.

Personally I wouldn't want to use a projector for making music as I'd probably get neck pain pretty soon.

Also there's been research that concluded that anything bigger than 24 inch or so actually lowers productivity, but I don't know what setting this research was performed in.

you don't need a whole lot of resolution for running reason.

I'm telling you yekkers, double monitors. I have a small desk as well, just keep shit organzised and you'll be fine.

i fucking want one of these. my 19" widescreen is only 1440x900, and while it's ok, i wouldn't mind a slightly larger physical screen with an awesome resolution like that

i had 2 22" samsung widescreens at work (1680x1050) but they both shat. now i have a 27" imac (2560 x 1440) and i really really miss 2 screens. im work in graphic design and got so used to having multiple documents and programs up at the same time. now im back to maximizing/minimizing all day like a schnook.

i feel like the 2560x1440 is almost too big. plus the new apple mouse tracks slower than the mighty mouse.

i never got along with it, sides of the mouse dont work anymore (new magic mouse) plus you have to use the function keys on the new keyboard. total pain in the ass. i loved being about to copy paste from word to indesign, or illy to photoshop, etc with such ease. im getting used to it, but my workflow shouldnt go backwards with new hardware. oh well, i guess the main point now with apple is how cool this tiny wireless keyboard looks on my desk though

How about virtual desktops? OS X has those right? I can't believe how stupid Microsoft is by not having this in Windows 7.
