"We went to a label in Manchester that distributed XL. The guy there was like, “Yeah, you need to measure it up more squared like every 16 bars, maybe get a vocal loop in there,

maybe a rock stab would be fresh.” And we’re thinking, “Shut up! This isn’t what we do.” The best thing he said was, “It reminds me of Brian Eno.” But that was an insult from him."

what was it?

not really a quote, but on the receiving end of a critique from some wine sipping bastard at an art gallery that was just talking shit about everything in the gallery:

"you're not a musician... you're a sound designer!"

i was like... that's coo! and walked away.

"I've done loads of secret things. There are quite a few that no one has come close to guessing. But then, a lot of people think everything electronic is mine.

I get credited for so many things, it's incredible. I'm practically everyone, I reckon — everyone and nobody."

sorry i don't really have a quote, but i like these articles about the early idm artists setting up studios in their bedrooms... i've heard that from aphex twin, luke vibert and mike paradinas

i'm a fan of eno's oblique strategies... i don't know if you'd call them 'quotes', necessarily, but they're the same ilk, and if you're stuck on a project, they can definitely help point you in a new direction. they're very open-to-interpretation and can work for more than just music, however.

"This thing I’ve been thinking about recently is how to fuse acoustic sounds, like piano and stuff, with really brutal electronics, but without making the electronics have that sort of plasticy sound,

which I think they often can do in a really bad way in my mind, and it doesn’t complement the acoustic sounds. When I hear stuff like that it’s like tasting some really weird combination of food,

like tasting porridge with garlic in it. So I’m trying to make stuff more homogenous, and I find samplers work really well with that. I don’t know why, I don’t know if it’s just an aesthetic thing,

like the way they look, but when you start changing bit rates and making stuff sound more crusty it tends to also make it sound

more natural and I really strive for that I guess, stuff that sounds a bit damaged and gnarly."

' Too many sheep and not enough shepherds. Let's all sit back and have a long hard think, then make something different! We can all do it, surely?'
