tassman 4 has the be the closest thing to sounding analogue

Recommended Posts

Personally I don't much care for vsts emulating analog hardware. It's like trying to make an oil painting in Photoshop. I think computers are best off when used to push electronic sounds in ways that would be impractical/impossible with analog gear (like those intentional file corruption experiments going on in the other thread), instead of trying to be something they aren't.

That being said, I like using Digidrum vst for pitched synth drum stuff.

Yeah, agree with this.

i generally agree but i'm trying to go for an analogue electro type sound at the moment - without a real analogue synth. and surprisingly the results aren't bad at all with tassman and kontakt sampling vintage stuff

the Tassman is good but the Auturia's are better

The EMS AKS VST isn't bad either but very pricey

put them up against real analogue and you start hearing the 'softness' of softsynths in the higher octaves

Just bought Tassman 4. Pumped! Was on sale from plugin boutique for like $120. I'm hoping I can use it for tons of stuff including effects, and get rid of a bunch of the stolen shit I have. :D

Oh god dammit. I knew I was missing a good software sale somewhere. Fuck.

Basically the only musician I know of who's doing that much (or to the extreme at least) is CYLOB. Who is the fucking man.

This is fucking truth. "Lobster Tracks" is a standout for me on this aesthetic. Autechre definitely get the weirdy-beardy out on their Macs and Monos but it's obvious that they are jangling keys, farting, hitting cardboard boxes, and doing other "analogue" things to feed into the hopper. It's like Chris gives you a totally dry mix out of the headphone jack of his computer going apeshit on hitched blip beats and granular-type (? can't explain, it's Cylob proprietary, lol). time stretches. You almost can't even use words to talk about it because it is so dependent on knowing his latter output. He's wanted to get this for years, you can tell. The Cylob mix of "Ventolin", although surely composed of samples of his dot matrix printer shitting its pants, was a precursor to him saying "fuck it" and writing the programs to do his bidding.

*loads up Cylob discography in playlist. Is satisfied*

This post is just about enough for me to embark on a proper Cylob hunt, to see what the fuss is about.

It goes beyond the mere analog analogy really. It also does FM, and physical modeling. You can also flip it around and it becomes a complete modular system! It's like reaktor but with a much stronger analog lean. No math or anything really. It even counts note numbers by volts! :D

It's not about VSTs sounding analogue, it's about VSTs sounding effortlessly good like some of the most famous analogue synths. Most softsynths don't, but few exceptions do ;)

Few analogue synths sound as good as a MS20 or a MIniMoog anyway.

I'm quite a big fan of Oskari's (the guy who made Buzz) Corona VSTi for analogue type noises -

Nice little tune there Mr Pete!

Alot of analogs don't even sound analog.

wut.

lol I think I kind of get what he means...for example the Roland JX-8P and Roland SuperJX/JX-10 sound quite "digital" - audible stepping when performing filter sweeps etc. I love both these synths but I could see how, for analogue synths, they don't sound classically analogue.

I don't get the talk about analogue vs plugins. It would be like saying that this painting isn't a true painting because it was used with the wrong brush or something.

If that is what floats your boat... ;)

Also, I hate it when people say, "My *insert instrument/synth* doesn't sound right. What should I buy instead?" Learn how to use your tools.

Tassman has one of the most offputting interfaces I've ever seen. Sonigen is worth keeping an eye on if you're interested in analogish modular stuff. Bazille too.

some guy named George runs DiscoDSP and made Corona. The only VST Oskari made that I can find is a soundfont player

This one? I've seen a bunch of AKS vsts, free and proprietary, just curious which you were talking about.

well so much for a discussion about tassman. :|

Really, so why is Oskari talking about him making bug fixes on this forum then ? - http://forums.jeskola.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=60 (the whole thing is a VSTi based on a native plugin called QSamo he made for Buzz)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.
