isn't that youtube clip just 4/4? it doesn't sound like 6/8 at all.

6/8 is BASICALLY just 3/4

yeah?

welllll 6/8 as i understand it is a 3/4 beat with a stress on every second downbeat? 1-2-3-4-5-6-

which is essentially a 3/4 with a two-bar syncopation on the downbeat? 1-2-3-1-2-3-

loving the discussion of time sigs.

kaini - 3/4 and 6/8 can be thought of as being primarily the same, except of course in 6/8 the eighth note is the unit of the beat. It kind of gives the sound a little more urgency.

Observe:

3/4

6/8

For some great time sig tomfoolery, Blue Rondo A La TUrk by the Dave Brubeck quartet is excellent.

The 9/8 section is broken up into 2+2+2+3 (x3) followed by a section that goes 3+3+3. Then of course when they go into the solos the alternation between 9/8 and 4/4 is awesome

3/4 has a distinct "three-feel", typically accented on the first and third beat.

6/8 is a "compund double" and has a distinct "two-feel", typically accented on the first and fourth beat. The accents are evenly spaced.

I'd argue that this one is in 6/8 and not 3/4:

Sometimes the two are indistinguishable. I think a good rule of thumb is to count out the beats per measure and see which counting method feels more natural. Typically, songs in 6/8 could be rewritten in 2/4 with two sets of triplets per measure, whereas 3/4 songs cannot.

I'm no music theory expert in any way; I just start counting and then just guess on the bottom number. when I think of 6/8 I think of something like "all blues" by miles davis. to me it's sort of a double-time waltz feel.

It's hard to find electronic tracks in that signature.

pretty much.

Well, the real distinction between 3/4 and 6/8 is that the former is still in duplets and the latter is in triplets. If it's a fast 3/4, then it's most likely 6/8.

By the way, this is in 6/8:

What epsy and margaret thatcher mentioned were all in 4/4. Plus, kaini's confusion proves that nobody on this forum knows how to calculate a time signature properly. Neither do I...

uhm...nope all the tunes I mentioned are in 6/8.

disco mushroom by infected mushroom starts in 6/8 and changes to 4/4 halfway thru. check it out.

Gotta love how me simply asking for tunes in a certain time sig turns into an academic discussion about time signatures. This board used to be awesome several years ago.

Here's a track in 3/4 time. Notice the diff?

this track is actually 6/4

it counts it in quarter notes 1-2-3-4-5-6 -- 1-2-3-4-5-6

6/8 does the same thing but with 8th note values relative to the master tempo.

i really hate to break it to you epsy, but that infected mushroom track is mos def in 4/4

summertime clothes is in 4/4 triplets (shuffletime, whatever you wanna call it)

3/4 and 6/8 are virtually the same thing. think "kiss from a rose" by seal, "norwegian wood" by the beatles, etc. few electronic songs are in this time. i can only think of "spanish castles in space" by the orb and "think about me" by artful dodger.
