wouldn't it need to have an infinite bitrate? and isn't that impossible for a digital file to do?

Since the digital release of Oversteps, 16-bit wav files don't seem enough, so bleep made 24-bit wav files available solely for Autechre. Afterwards people will complain there is a difference between 48-bit and 24-bit wav files.

flac is just a fancy way of zipping a .wav file. no information is lost from the original .wav input. you can unflac your file, and get back 100% of the data you started with.

so then, does a wav file have an infinite bitrate?

a wav file has fixed bitrate. the same bitrate as the cd.

i guess i just don't understand how it can be lossless and have a bitrate. unless i am confused about the definition of lossless.

you're talking about bit-depth. completely different

If you use MP3, you hate music.

If your ipod doesn't support FLAC , USE OTHER LOSSLESS FORMAT OR GET FUCKING ROCKBOX.

lossless just means you don't lose anything going from one format to another. the data is the same on the cd, in the .wav file, and in the flac.

but not the mp3. the mp3 discards some bits of information in order to get smaller sizes. for example, frequencies above 16khz might be cut off. the data lost in going from cd to mp3 can not be regained. in other words, it's lossy.

I am sorry , but if you rather listen to a shit quality version of a track , you either hate music or are totally ignorant of the magic of lossless formats

it depends on choice man.

if someone wants to use MP3 because that's what their portable player supports, and is a format that allows them the best use of their storage, then that's their prerogative.

Easy solution - ROCKBOX

Unless you have a 20 Gigabytes storage capability , you have no fucking excuse. , there are ways.

funnily enough, Rockbox doesn't work on every portable digital music player.

there is no excuse for you

wow, you must really love music unlike all those haters. but a flac album is like 500mb, and a 320k will be about 120mb. its all about the numbers.

Yep to both points (and I have decent headphones). I am yet to meet someone who can tell the difference 'tween v0s and flacs.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Guest nene multiple assgasms

I would use flac for archiving purposes on the old external hard drive. it's lossless, so you can convert it to whatever the latest greatest format is that comes along in the future for use on your portable personal listening device.
