Guest 277: 930-933
A friend is throwing a sort of buffet type party where everyone brings one or two dishes, everything's put out and the host provides drinks. I've already decided on making sticky toffee pudding, inspired by an earlier thread on WATMM. But I'd like to also do something savory (I don't like this word) and would like some suggestions! Preferably something a bit out of the ordinary, most of the people there won't be too easily impressed. BTW I live in the Netherlands, so please take into consideration that maybe I won't have access to certain region specific ingredients...but on the other hand stuff that can be ordered online would be okay so that only leaves out region specific ingredients that spoil easily or are illegal to ship. Let's have it! Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/54540-culinary-advice/ Share on other sites
Fred McGriff
so something kind of hors d'oeuvre-y or something more substantial? how long would you imagine this would have to sit out? will you be able to keep it warm? there are a lot of limiting factors with pot luck dinners. and you have to eat everyone's shit, like 7 or 8 different versions of multi-layer bean dip. make sure it's something that you are going to like, so you can munch on it. a good stuffed mushroom recipe is what comes to my mind right now. or maybe picadillo (cuban ground beef dish). you could do like a queso with picadillo, bring that in a crock pot, and bring a huge fuck off stack of plantain chips to dip it in. i would literally sit there and dip my balls in it so no one else would come near it, then finish it off myself. then i would squat over someone's multi-layer bean dip, and take a dump on it, then leave. bacon-wrapped dates? or pancetta-wrapped dates for you would probably be better, dont know if you can get american bacon. or make a big batch of really mean mac and cheese with proper good cheeses, and put a bunch of pancetta in it. i dont know. just my 2 cents, good luck Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/54540-culinary-advice/#findComment-1275499 Share on other sites

Guest iep
maybe a big batch of tapenade with some quality bread? how about a nice hearty mushroom-tapenade with tartufata? plus a loaf of decent full-grain bread. and a sac of rucola. you could also bring some cold cuts with that..lamb/sheep/goat/game carpaccio would go nice with the heartiness of the tapenade! encey
Phyllo straws are great and easy, if you have the time for a lot of rolling -- just buy a package of phyllo dough and then whatever you want to put inside: prosciutto, or Nutella, or dill cream cheese, or some kind of fruit preserves or chutney. Layer five sheets of phyllo dough on top of each other, coating each lightly with olive oil before adding the next layer. Then cut the sheets into squares, then into triangles. Place your filling along the longest side of the triangle and then roll the sheet up from that side, so that you have a kind of straw of phyllo with filling inside. Then just bake em, not very long -- maybe at 400 degrees F for a few minutes, until the dough starts to brown. Put em standing up in colorful cups filled with some kind of cool napkins or tissue paper or something, for presentation. Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide encey's signature Hide all signatures essines said: i am hot shit ... that smells like baking bread. Guest 277: 930-933
Some great ideas here, I'm excited about the pancetta wrapped dates, selfmade tapenade with some game cold cuts and encey's phylo's! Satay is always nice, but more suited for a barbecue event I think. DANG! Gonna be hard to choose, might have to go all out on this or do some freak combo. Baby back ribs! Everything's appealing! jules
Rick bayless has some awesome taco recipes. There is a killer pork timga taco with chipotle and red potatoes. You can make it in a crock pot which is super easy and you can set it to the warm function at the party so it's hot for eveyone. It's a really killer recipe. The potatoes get super creamy and soft so they add a wonderful texture. You don't even need sour cream. Serve some tomatillo salsa verde or some guacamole on the side with soft corn tortillas. http://tastyeatsathome.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/chipotle-pork-tinga-tacos/ Edited March 23, 2010 by jules Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide jules's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/54540-culinary-advice/#findComment-1276932 Share on other sites
kaini
bloedworst is a perfectly acceptable substitute for black pudding here. i recommend barely blending, and mostly kneading by hand. Quote kaini's blackpuddinburgers ingredients 750g minced beef steak breadcrumbs an egg, maybe two. a big mild chilli a large mild onion 250g a decent chunk of black pudding several cloves of garlic oregano, basil, and black pepper method separate the eggs and discard the yolks. or hold on to them if you're frugal. blend all ingredients. up to you if you want a fine dice or a coarse one. form into burger shapes. dust with flour if they're a bit gooey. fry. this makes over a kilo, i made a decent 5 or 6 massive burgers with it Edited March 23, 2010 by kaini Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide kaini's signature Hide all signatures On 5/7/2013 at 11:06 PM, ambermonk said: I know IDM can be extreme On 6/3/2017 at 11:50 PM, ladalaika said: this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/54540-culinary-advice/#findComment-1276947 Share on other sites
