Artificial Intelligence

I've heard a lot of talk about the AI series (only two albums right?) and I've tried searching on the forums for topics on the subject but wound up with nada. What is so special about them? Are they worth purchasing? As I am sure all of you know by now, I've only been introduced to the IDM/electronic genre for the past few months (being a hardcore indie/rock/folk fan beforehand) and I need some direction!!

So your thoughts on AI would be wonderful ^_^

A.I. #1 and Aphex Twin "On" were my first two electronic albums, back in '93 or '94 (if you don't count the maxi-single for LA Style's "James Brown is Dead).

A.I. #1 has some dope shit on it.

It's worth getting to hear all of those songs in juxtaposition to each other.

It's cool that it was somewhat of a flagship for the whole "ambient techno" movement.

Love the comps, and it is worth checking out the albums. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence_(series)

Huh, I only knew of AI as the compilation albums, never knew there was a series of albums associated with the name. I'm especially surprised since I have a few of those albums.

It might be sacrilege to say, but I think AI 1 has dated poorly on the whole, though it does have a few standouts. AI 2 on the other hand really held up quite well. I'd recommend looking into the OOP special editions of AI 2 if possible, since there are good extra tracks. In particular, the vinyl special edition has a 2nd song by Bola that isn't on any of the other versions. It's hard to understand the logic behind this decision, since this song is considerably better than the other Bola track which appeared on other versions, and is one of the best tracks on the whole album. Also, the special edition has tracks by Kenny Larkin and Aphex Twin, the latter of which would have fit in nicely on Melodies from Mars.

i didn't realize this whole time that all of those albums (polygon window and F.U.S.E.) were all part of the same series on Warp, that's pretty awesome. I popped in that F.U.S.E. disc for the first time in like 8 years yesterday and it's aged pretty well.

if by "know" you mean "heard" then I can sorta understand that. I rarely download music, so I never got a chance to hear AI1 and 2 until warp reissued them in 2CD form for warp20. (It is for this reason that I also got broadcast's first two albums, and LFO's frequencies and sheath).

I really would love if they re-released bytes and spanners though. that would really make it for me. some b12 too.

yeah, well, if i didnt download there would be a lot that i'd never hear. so yeah there's that. i didnt know they reissued A1 & A2 for warp 20. isnt there like a second cd in AI2? are those tracks on the reissue?

I just assume everyone downloads everything. didnt mean to question anyone's integrity.

These are the albums that got me and my friends into Warp Records back in '93. For me, they are the groundwork for my love of techno, IDM, whatever you call it these days.

watmm can be educational, this thread made me go look up the series and i found out that there were a number of solo albums in the series including Polygon Window, a B12 and Black Dog LP. I always thought it was just the 2 compilations
