This is a FANTASTIC album. I was going to start a thread about it, but you've beaten me to it. I think they're my favorite metal band right now, and that's partly because I like their vocals so much. Greg's crazy versatile, and he's got great melodic sensibilities too. He's like all the singers I loved in my adolescence rolled into one, but more vicious. Usually it bugs me when singers ape other singers in a really obvious way, but he's just so fucking good at it, and stronger than the singer he's sounding like more often than not. The whole band really is second to none.

Their last album was crap. Miss machine was mostly crap. Everything before that is fucking genius. I haven't even paid attention this this because of ire works. I imagine it's more of the same or is it worth getting? This is only half the band that made calculating infinity anyway

I haven't paid any attention to the lyrics. Most of the lyrics I've caught on the previous albums have been kind of lame at worst, unremarkable otherwise. But he sings them with such conviction that I'm okay with it. With metal, I don't really care what the fuck they're singing about as long as the delivery's good. Of course, I might feel differently if I could actually understand the words. Bad lyrics in almost any other genre can really get under my skin.

If you didn't like their last couple albums, you probably won't like this one either. It doesn't add much new to the equation, they're just getting better at their craft... doesn't really compare all that much to their older albums.

It's like you people never heard of their first album ten years ago. This album is a poor replica of that first album.

What a disappointing record. I mean, yeah, it's sorta good but if you have followed them since Calculating Infinity this is a waste of time. Utter retread with nothing new to add. Especially disappointing when you consider how fucking awesome the last one (Ire Works) was and how much of a step forward it represented. Makes this one seem really one-dimensional and tactless.

And for the record, they stole their shtick off Meshuggah and Refused (the former of which still kick their ass and the later broke up almost immediately after their best album). DEP did psychopathic a lot more convincingly with Dimitri :rhubear2:

I've just listened to this after some good comments and made it midway through track 3. I really dislike Greg's vocals so it just ruins it all for me. Last good thing DEP did was the Irony EP which is up there as one of the best releases ever. I wish I liked this but I just don't

all of their intense stuff sounds the same to me. i think i'm a reverse DEP fan or something, i only like when they do something unique with melodic vocals or electronics or jazz chords. the spazzy songs just don't do it for me, too many ridiculous timing changes for no reason.

I hope I never get too old to listen to heavy ass math metal

give yourself another ten years and you'll be like, "man, this is the exact same thing they were doing ten years ago. are they really still that pissed off? jeeeeez"

43% Burnt never loses any luster. Even if the outro is the most obvious Meshuggah rip-off they've ever committed to disk.

i can still listen to calculating any day of the week. there's just no way to top that record

not really referring to DEP im talkin more about listening to meshuggah, textures, reflux etc. any good extreme/tech/math metal or any self indulgent idm/electronic that I still love from back in the day.

Im sure your a little older than me but im 26 and I dont feel like my taste in music is getting more "mature" so to speak and not being able to listen to good extreme music I loved when I was 16. my taste in music is just getting more dynamic and appreciative

im def not saying thats exactly whats going to happen. it did happen to me though. after 30 or so, i started to move away from the really heavy stuff. i still adore meshuggah, its just not like it used to be. i listen to that on a less frequent basis. when i was younger and pissed, that stuff was great. now im just old and cynical. sometimes i feel like i have the mind of an 75 year old man sitting on his porch who doesnt want any kids in his yard

At least Meshuggah do more (comparatively) chilled abstract stuff so you don't always have to be ready to break things when you listen to them  The second half of 'In Death is Death' is especially wonderful. Matter of fact, that whole record just blows me the fuck away and other than 'Dehumanization' it really isn't that psycho.
