Earth hour.

So, everyone turns off their lights.

But, guess what?

Power plants generate electricity based upon trends over periods of time. Power plants don't turn on and off with a switch. It takes days to dial down production, weeks to turn them off and weeks to turn them back on.

You turn off your lights, but the power for that is still being generated. Your power plant produces it, you don't use it and then it gets passed onto another grid and your plant doesn't get money for it and eventually has to raise your rates because it's losing money.

Now, it passes onto another grid, which is producing based on its own trends in demand and people there are turning off their lights too so there is extra power there, which is added to your extra power and moves on again.

People across the country are turning their lights off, so the amount of extra power generated increases geometrically.

It's not used, it eventually gets grounded away.

So, on an ordinary day, X amount of power is used for Y amount of greenhouse gasses.

The goal is to make Y lower. But the result of Earth Hour is to make X lower. Making the proportion of greenhouse gasses to power used even worse.

Congrats, you're not only morons but you're making pollution worse and you're contributing to increasing costs of energy.

did you think it'd be so big if it could possibly hurt the industry?

People use electricity like it originates at the switch on the wall. Intellectually they know how it works, but they don't consider it on an everyday basis.

The best possible thing you can do to reduce greenhouse gasses through tweaking electricity consumption is to turn off lights and devices in rooms you aren't in and do it 24/7/365.

Short bursts of moderation are more harmful than overuse.

When did you become an environmentalist?

Since never! I hate our climate and hope it dies a horrible painful death!

My favorite were the myspace gas protests; "Don't buy gas on this day, and anticipate not buying gas on this day by buying it the day before."

I know, crazy isn't it. it's almost as if the whole thing is being done to raise awareness or something, rather than actually cut energy use for 60mins or something. Pfft.

"Making people aware" has always been a very pointless motive. If you want to save the Earth, stop drinking bottled water and find a way to make solar power cheap and more efficient. Making people aware just motivates them to turn off the lights for a day, after which they'll go back to their normal schedule.

It's better just to turn off lights you're not using the whole year round. The hallway/garage/unattended rooms.

They have this clean up australia day every year here. I don't help out, as i don't litter, and often on top of that randomly pick up and throw away things when a bin is near if it's not gungy, anyway.

I get the feeling that these types of communal events only serve to salve the consciences of the wasteful and the litterbugs. Kinda like the way that going to church every sunday or so helps rip off slaves to mammon sleep better at night.

:facepalm::trashbear:

I also agree with the making people aware point of view, it helps galvanize the plebs into action or something. maybe, hopefully, fucking plebs.

If you had a deregulated market (?) you could have bought the power at a cheaper rate on the open market for that hour. I should have done that here, make a change from getting ripped more and more by the bastards.

are you talking about the people participating in earth hour or those who try to clean shit up every day?
