BoC as Film Music for a Supernatural/Psychological Thriller?

Okay, I'm a new member so perhaps this topic has already been played out, but ever since I heard Geogaddi I thought BoC's music would be utterly perfect as the score to a psychological thriller or supernatural film. I don't know how keen they'd be on either licensing their tracks or creating new material, but any such film would already have a huge mood advantage, not to mention it would probably increase awareness of the group with folks who somehow aren't familiar with them yet.

Hell you could almost write a film AROUND the music, really. Half the song titles already are reminiscient of people, places or dates. Then again, it would take quite a bit of skill as a filmmaker to create visuals that really went with the tracks. I think the movie would almost need to have effects applied to it to make it look washed out, or like it was recovered from some abandoned attic somewhere. On a similar note, I know for the most part BoC has never made many videos, but what a missed opportunity... the 060606=666 video was excellent.

Ah well, maybe someday.

editing for mood should eliminate any effects applied

some of the old tunes would work well in that respect.

what's that track...house of adin....uhh *checks media player* House of Adin'adab?

I was thinking of that one when I read the 1st post. Although I guess it would be kind of difficult to have BoC as score for a film. Most of the tracks tell an individual story, Happy Cycling, Pete Standing Alone, Seeya Later, ... the titles just vaguely push you in a certain direction, but the actual images happen in your head. So with a film with story and all I see two problems - first of all people who didn't know the tracks in advance won't get a chance to fill the stories with their own images and people who are familiar with the tracks might see their vision misunderstood, can't get into the filmmaker's interpretation. And secondly, the loose ends of these stories would inevitably be tied, taking away the feeling that you're just getting a little glimpse into something, which these nostalgic or childhood memories are all about, in a way. They're highly subjective and out of focus and only certain elements stick out. I have my own pictures in mind for every track of theirs I know, but I'm almost certain barely anyone would share them.

I'm not saying it's impossible and shouldn't be done, but it would be really difficult to make a full length film with BoC pre-existing tracks. If they'd compose directly for a film, could be a different thing. I don't know if the guys would want that at all. Who knows, maybe they would. I've made a few BoC videos some years ago, but looking at them again now, I feel (despite some of them having nice visuals) I was pretty much just relying too much on the old "instant-BoC formula" of rainbows etc. and that wasn't even my personal vision for the tracks.

I might do a new video some time to one of my own favourite tracks. Just to re-create my personal visuals on film. And perhaps someone will say hey, that's what's in my head too. :flower:

I thought about this too, although for me, when I listen to BoC I don't really get a picture moreso than a vibe or feeling. If I consciously try to let the music create something or remind me of something, I suppose it can, but there is no real "story" or distinct images created for me.

I know some people aren't a fan of remixes, but I like it when a track is reimagined differently. Even if people already have mental images or whatnot for existing BoC tracks, I think that certain songs could be effectively used for a film, although it's safe to say that the new usage isn't always going to mesh with someone's pre-existing feelings about a song. I suppose this could also be considered a different form of "reimagining" the mood or intention of a song.

I get what you mean about letting people form their own thoughts about songs without it being automatically associated with a film's and it's images, though. That's legitimate for sure, it's always fascinating to me when one person listens to a BoC track and thinks it's ominous and threatening and it reminds someone else of happy, comforting thoughts.

The main reason I guess this whole concept occured to me is because I love abandoned places, it's fascinating to see what is left behind, try to imagine what something was like and also see the cruel effects of time and others upon it, and some of BoC's music has the same "lost and found/broken down by time" feeling. If done in the right way I think the music could be used as a giant emotional amplifier for the scenes. But you're right, BoC is incredibly evocative and effective in generating some kind of emotional response in the listener all on it's own. I don't think they'd want to score a scary film because in the past they've seemed to greater prefer having their songs open to interpretation, although the promo video for TCH certainly seems to indicate that they enjoy playing around with unsettling images for fun.

I gotta agree about the reimagining thing. I was thrilled when Six used Sunshine Recorder in his 2008 Halloween mix. Before I would have said it's the least appropriate place for the track, but then I got how the track can actually be interpreted as being pretty dark and ominous (even though I always found the distorted An Eagle In Your Mind-phrase pretty unsettling and it's one of the most subconscious sounds I've heard yet) The use of the track there kinda changed my view onto the whole thing, but in a good way. It's just given it more depth.

Yeah abandoned places have come to my mind as well when listening to BoC and thinking about video interpretatios, but I feel they shouldn't be abused too much either. Like there are so many people cutting old super 8 footage to BoC... it's seductive, yes, and fitting in a way, but it's just so easy... In reality I mostly connect specific situations and places with the individual tracks, not necessarily abandoned places, and if they are, they're rather comfortable, not creepy or dark.

We're been having these events in 2008 and 09 where I've made a compilation of tracks and put people in a swing I built out of a shopping trolley and spun them around to the music. Last year's 1st CD was entirely BoC, and I tried to give the place a certain look that I thought was appropriate for the musical theme, adjusted the lighting depending on the track and so on. The people who went there were mostly unfamiliar with the music, most of them are listening to very different stuff actually. But in the end it turned out to be a real funny way of letting them have a sort of excursion into my interpretation of the mood of the tracks without creating an image that's too clear... not to forget the childish fun you get when put in a shopping trolley that crashes into trees.

Here's a vid of some bits from the BoC phase I cut together. Keep in mind, this is not meant as a video clip on its own, it's more just something to look back to for the people who were there:
