GAK EP / Expert Knob Twiddlers

Here we are with the more lighthearted, simple side of RDJ! Short listen this week, but still great. EKT is a classic, and GAK was mindblowing for its time

This week reminds me of the time I was in hospital for two weeks and I didn't get a chance to change the tracks on my MP3 player, so all I had to listen to was Mike and Rich, the GAK EP, and 26 Mixes for cash. God, getting home and listening to Pen Expers for the first time in a fortnight was something special, but that's for another subforum.

i really like EKT, it's pure afx funkyness with some u-ziq thrown in.

eggy toast in particular is a very interesting track to me, can't think of any other track from either of them that sounds quite like this one.

GAK 1's piano melody is my definition of love.

Mr Frosty is a beautiful track.

first track i heard from EKT was giant deflating football. i was really left floored by how odd the track was, i had to listen to the rest of the album. no disappointment

I have love for GAK because of it's simple naive approach. I feel like Rich used a small studio setup and did some quick sketches and this is the result.

GAK 1: Driving bassline is nice. The 'rave' piano stabs are cool. vocal bits are nice and the use of mic'd sounds at around 4:00 is evidence or early efforts to bring the outside in.

GAK 2: Love the sound @ 2:09 and the beat breakdown @ 3:36

GAK 3: Reverbed flute sound is nice and the delayed percussion @ 3:30 reminds me of the delay used in Quoth.

GAK 4: the vocal sounds used @ 1:37 are super nice. bits of this remind me of the 'time to find me' mix.

Here's how EKT goes for me:

Mike: Hey Rich, let's do a collab mate.

Rich: Eh...

Mike: No really... It'll be great!

Rich: Eh...

Mike: Okay, seriously... i'll get all the gear and sounds together. You bring the alcohol.

Rich: Eh... alright.

during the session:

Mike: This is wicked... we're making shit together mate!

Rich: Eh...

Mike: Let's put this beat on here and this sound here... oh, what about this effect!

Rich: Eh...

Mike: What do you want to add in?

Rich: Eh... Vodka.

Mike: Right!

I had super high hopes when this came out... listened through it several times and realized there's too much Mike and not enough Rich!

The only track I like is Vodka.

Yep , Richard did Vodka , the other dude did the rest.

Vodka and Richard's stupid face on the cover are the only things worth it about this release.

Mike Paradinas is NOTHING less than awesome.

GAK - All about GAK 4, as it's my favorite, and always gives me a good body buzz with that flawless rolling bassline. A happy ending to a rather unsettling, eerie, bass-oriented string of trance-inducing songs that make up the meat of this EP. And by 'bass-oriented' i mean, if played on good enough speakers or headphones, could quite effectively make you sick to your stomach....

EKT - Oh my god Vodka is amazing... some of his grooviest acid lines ever, shit just echoes into infinite raving bliss. The peak of Richards MfM sound.

Mr. Frosty - Chillingly good.

Jelly Fish - inb4.. aw fuck it

Vodka - Eh it's okay

Overall: who cares

Mr. Frosty - from the very first time i heard it, it reminded me of music that would fit in one of the snow levels in super mario 64.

bu bu bu ba for some reason makes me think of sitting by a campfire at night out on the prairie, staring up at the star speckled sky. the descending string sounds and the sampled rubber glove (or balloon, or whatever the hell that is) are my favourite portions.

and i actually really like Brivert and Muons. it's also the reason i am here, when i was searching for that song i ran into this place. you can thank mike

No one gives a shit about my opinion, but I'll give it a try.

Expert Knob Twiddlers

Mr. Frosty - This track is beautiful. Those strings at 2:10.. wow. Very different compared to the other tracks on the album. I like it. 8/10

Jelly Fish - Very µ-Ziq'y (In a good way). The high pitched noises annoys the piss out of me. not really one of my favorites. ok track. 6/10

Eggy Toast -Dammit. One of the most atmospheric tracks on the album. 9/10

Reg - lol at the vocal samples. The middle section is beautiful (and quite catchy). 9/10

Vodka - Not a big fan of this one. I like the drums... 5/10

Winner Takes All - ICBYD drums. Reminds me of a more playful version of some of the tracks on ICBYD. 8/10

Giant Deflating Football - this track makes me lol for some reason. 8/10

Upright kangaroo - Hmmm. 7/10

The sound Of Beady Eyes - The melody in this is just perfect. Makes me happy 9/10

Bu bu bu ba - BU BU BU BA HOLY SHIT THIS TRACK IS AWESOME!! I used to listen to this every night before I went to bed. It's all about the layers here. This track alone is worth the price of the album! edit: almost forgot about the horns 2:10 into the track! Perfect nighttime music 12/10

In conclusion, this album is awesome because it has Bu Bu Bu Ba on it.

^From what I hear it was done in a weekend. And RDJ (if not both of them) was probably high the whole time.

one weekend? nahh i think they wouldn't be arsed to get an albums worth of material in that time, and on drugs/alcahol.
