Coke Can and Carpet tracks

I was under the impression that some of his computer tracks used samples of a Coke can being tapped in place of traditional high hats.

As for specific songs, no idea.

i noticed by complete chance when i was looking at this old watmm thread using the wayback machine. it's a few posts down, the guy with only 4 posts

it's right there at the beginning

the afx.dreamhosters group also had them, but you can't access that site anymore

i remember posting in that thread, like awepittance from 4 years ago said, its just information extrapolated from various bullshit-filled interviews and distorted. he probably mentioned once that he'd sampled coke cans and somehow this got exagerrated into a full unreleased album of coke can trax from 1986 or something.

mental zx81 is a reference to a prog he wrote that would make a zx81 play music... well, noise - if you placed a radio tuned to just the right frequencies next to it

the mental thing? he won a prize from an early computer mag for it and said mag published the listing.

i had a zx81 when i was 4 or 5 - and i used have a copy of this mag a long, long time ago.

the release itself is probably fake though.

i think Aphex Twin's interviews and claims will be examined for the historical record in the future by scholars. At least in my lifetime it was the first time i realized you could just make up the most fantastic shit and the media would eat it up and be inclined to believe you. There were others before him, William Randolph Hearst, Orson Welles, but RDJ will always remain the king for me.

edit: i miss wacky Aphex interviews. The last really insane one i remember reading was the one where he threatened to bury himself when he died with tons of unreleased music so his fans would have to dig up his body to get it. Or did i dream that?

i'd like to know if you did or not, lol

and after reading that old thread, i find some of it very curious. like the acid house tracks from 1985, Unreleased Tracks From Didgeridoo Sessions, etc.

what exactly is that NME interview track?

Those carpet and coke tracks (I still have both of them) are fucking ace. I thought at one point it was determined they were by... uh... a WATMM regular back then? Noice or some shit?

Errr, I just listened to them both and they're alright... I'm thinking of a couple of different mystery songs.

This is also from an interview right? It sounds really familiar about him doing an easy listening album.

yeah i had those tracks as well from afx.dreamhosters, they were low bitrate mp3s. in the notes it said something like "part of recordings with luke vibert, they went on for hours" which i found kind of humorous (in a 'this has to be fake' way AND in a 'that's what she said' way) anyway, it's on my busted HD now.

there was another very low quality mp3 from that site that was 'supposed' to be a clip aphex twin and alec empire Djing live or some nonsense.

I recall a vaguely similar story in an interview/article, only it was a japanese fan who asked to be buried with her RDJ record collection...

Well, I've gone ahead and recorded my own Coke Can and Carpet track. This should give you some idea of what Richard's tracks sound like. I sampled two different multipack cans of Coca Cola, and the scraping of the carpet in the other bedroom. Let me know what you think. Also, try listening to it at half the speed, that's pretty cool.
