2010: The year THEY make contact

Mysterious radio waves emitted from nearby galaxy

  Quote
There is something strange in the cosmic neighbourhood. An unknown object in the nearby galaxy M82 has started sending out radio waves, and the emission does not look like anything seen anywhere in the universe before.

"We don't know what it is," says co-discoverer Tom Muxlow of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics near Macclesfield, UK.

BULLSHIT.

even if this were true, it'd be incapable of being measured.

"apparent" sideways velocity. It's basically just an illusion.

why? clearly if they can locate a "source" and determine that the source is "moving" they should be able to calculate how fast its suppoesdly going?

apparent sideways velocity? is this because of the curvature of space?

my very limited understanding of relativity suggests that if an object travelled faster than the speed of light, you could not give it a fixed location at any particular time.

you can, in the particular times when it is fixed and not moving

no, i mean, if an object is moving at a velocity below the velocity of light, you can tell where it is at a given time.

if it's traveling faster than the velocity of light, it will not appear in an environment at any given time, because it has travelled faster than its environment.

i'm not very good at explaining this. i never did relativity for my maths degree, only shite like mathematical finance and complex functions.

ok ok it says it's an illusion, fair enough. still sounds dubious to me.

probably nothing, just a newly discovered natural phenomenon. we aren't that lucky that it would be aliens and i am sure if it would be from an alien origin, we wouldn't have heard about it in the first place.
