Earlier this year Wolfgang Voigt, co-founder of Kompakt and eminent techno producer best known for his releases as GAS and Mike Ink, revived his dormant Profan imprint.

A haven for more experimental electronic music, Profan re-entered the fray with a rhythmically jarring new 12″ from SOG (another of Voigt’s umpteen aliases). The next release on the label will also be from Voigt: its a full-length sequel of sorts to 2008’s Freiland Klaviermusik, with which it shares a title.

Out on June 8, the new Freiland Klaviermusik is inspired, like its predecessor, by the work of Conlon Nancorrow, best known for his high-speed compositions for player-piano. The cover art, described as a “tetrapak painting”, is by Voigt himself.

Is this anything like the Freiland series of 12"s he put out on Profan years ago? I really like about half of those...the other half is almost just too weird and slightly wanky. Interested if he's revisiting that a bit though...

Yikes...yeah this is nothing like the Freiland 12" series he did before. I'm not too sure if I like the tracks on that 12" you linked...still, I'll give the full CD a shot and see if it grabs me, but lord knows not everything WV has done is as good as stuff like Gas, Studio 1 or Mike Ink (IMO).

i'm still not too sure about that newest 12"... it's certainly pretty striking, but i can't quite make my mind up if it's weird genius or just ingeniously weird.

Yeah I am exactly at that point of indecision. Granted, that's what half of the Freiland 12"s were like before...where you can't quite tell if he's being serious and experimenting or if he's just being a wanky German who's been allowed to have too many sublabels.

He should've made an All album instead.

Man, All 1-5 are awesome! I second this wholeheartedly. Plus knowing him, I bet he has All 6-20 sitting on a hard drive somewhere...
