random acts of kindness

i went to the dollar store to buy a chocolate easter bunny for snack and the lady told me i needed to buy 2 dollars worth of stuff to pay with my debit card. the guy behind me was like "its; ok, i got you covered". a guy in his early forties maybe.... it was kinda uncomfortable for me, so i said thanks and i booked it out of there quickly, clenching my chocolate...

while this was certainly a random act of kindness it made me feel strange

would it have been worth the two dollars to not have felt awkward?

AJ Jacobs wrote about something like that in his book "the year of living biblically". He bough a coffee for some dude just randomly and the guy was all like "I don't feel comfortable with you doing that".

Weird that some people can't accept charity. Such a negative stigma to the word.
