Hooking a Bass Guitar to My Compy

yeah, there are many ways to do it.

first you will need some sort of software that will allow you to record/edit/sequence. hopefully you have this already.

next you will need a way to get the signal from your bass to your computer. this can be done through a mixer, recording the signal from your amp with a microphone, or with a USB/Firewire device (this is probably the easiest solution). something like this would work just fine, and would cost you between $100 and $200, which isn't bad.

you can go direct in and use VST's for amplification, or if you have a nice amp you can pass through that.

another solution is the mixer. you can get a cheap behringer for under $100. be careful though, as far as mixers go - you get what you pay for.

That thing looks pretty good, and from what little I've played with my M-Audio Oxygen 8, I like their products a lot.

Thankya very much, devil! Now, I pray that my shit soundcard can handle this.

no problem

if you are havin trouble with your soundcard, you could just replace it with a direct-in card like the delta 1010 instead of getting a mixer or a USB interface:

i used to have one and it worked great. they go for about $150 i think

i'm gonna get slated for this, but i've been known to hook the output of an electric bass guitar into the mic input of a laptop and record it without the amp. you really get a massive sub bass sound.

then add effects/digital tube amp distortion afterwards.

Whoa... I"ve been thinkin' about an external sound card type thing... cuz mine (and my driver) don't allow me to 'record what i hear' in any program :wtf:

Margaret-- what would connect from the bass to the itty bitty little mic-in port on my laptop?

be careful you don't over load your motherboard. Basses are highly resonant pulse-wave tensor modulation sources and can very easily fry your computational center wave structure.
