This stuff pisses me right off. If a civilization is advanced enough to travel through space-time to our solar system, they certainly aren't going to get detected and trapped by James Bond.

it's lengthy and lacks some sources but it does seem legit. Carter announcing the meeting of one is pretty significant in itself i'd say. i can't see a former president , with all the hype and prestige or whatever built up around it, just make up a story like that -even if he did swallow a few ten strips.

If we made contact already, then one of these would be true:

1) Nobody would know about it. Nobody.

2) We'd be slaves or dead.

3) Whatever country made contact would have co-opted the alien technology and subjugated the rest of the planet.

Depends what kind of contact. If it was carefully arranged and could be controlled i agree with 1. but otherwise i wouldn't be so sure about that assumption.

2. I don't think we would ever be slaves as we'd be useless to a civilisation capable of getting here. I feel pretty sure we'll be useless on Earth by the end of the century (probably earlier) due to robotics/machine automation!

this is also not the first time he expresses concern about an alien invasion.

as it was said before why would aliens care about our resources? all we have is water, they've accomplished interstellar travel, i'm sure they can put 2 Hs and 1 O together.

Well he's not far wrong. It's not so much about robotics though, it's AI and that's a genuine concern. The people working on it don't know what would happen if we created greater-than-human level intelligence and they shouldn't know either. The ideal outcome is that we merge with AI very gradually. I actually think that is going to happen. In fact you could argue the process began when someone first wore a pair of glasses or a hearing aid or something.

isnt there more than one type of intelligence? if we're just talking pure logic and calculation as intelligence, couldnt a calculator be considered intelligent?
