my mom just bought an Ipad, i made her buy the electribe app and she's been playing with it.

am i stupid or is it a legitimate question to ask why Reason doesn't have rebirth built into it yet?

edit: watching him turn those tiny knobs looks very frustrating

playing with several different iphone music apps, ive begun to notice I'm developing certain techniques to "playing" the knobs and sliders. it's a matter of tapping on the desired parameter initially, and then moving outwards while holding down... the further away you move, the finer the resolution, because you have a larger circumference (with a knob) for your finger to travel...

so if you tap and swipe it right, you get different motions/curves, with a simple flick. other little similar things as well.

its really like playing a video game almost... its all right there, and you access different functions and menus and devices, all at your fingertips. a cleverly designed controller on the iphone, can be as natural as playing a video game, and allows you a lot of speed in performing tasks... think of watching an amazing video gamer playing a complex intense game... but instead hes controlling music. triggering loops, bring up levels, doing a quick send, playing mono or 2 voice melodic lines on a keyboard, trigger an effect, etc. your eyes and hands arent moving away from your interface, so you do things very quickly.

the virtuosos of this, will be able to make some incredibly interactive and performable music. its all about designing interfaces that do exactly what you want them to do, and nothing more. and then learn to play and navigate it, just as you get used to the controls on a video game... there are tons of different techniques for every different game... itll be the same with songs.

any ways... /rant. i just know you dont like touch screens as controllers, robbie, so I thought I'd offer a perspective...

*all of that said... rebirth handles oddly. i dont want to zoom in and out. i want a tab along the top for each section, so i can have the screen focus on one device at a time, instantly.

looks like fun and a pain in the ass at the same time. tiny touchscreens are just not conducive to music making yet. The DS-10 for the nintendo DS is neat but fuck if i want to sit there actually sequencing patterns on such a tiny screen. Even with the DS stylus it's hard to accurately hit the notes you want. I can't imagine trying to sequence patterns with my fingers.

The Beatmaker app is pretty great but just too tiny to be fun to use for more than 30 mins.

Still, those complaints aside, its really fucking cool to have the original rebirth as a $7 mobile app. If i had an ipodtouch/iphone i would totally buy it and play it on the train after work all the time.

Also, touch screens are sweet and all, but I like tactile buttons and knobs, you know? I'd like to one day see an Optimus style LED keyboard/hardware device that is basically a huge screen but with hardware to confidently twiddle. I'm sure there can be a comprimise between the flexibility of a touch screen environment with the response of hardware. I think the latest generation of midi controllers replete with LEDs and sometimes full screens are the first step here, but I cant wait to have literally a huge ipad style screen with knobs sticking out of the screen itself, a device specifically for replicating VSTs complete with skins and everything.

that would be cool

Also touch screens need the ability to tweak multiple parameters at the same time. Does anyone know if iPad / iphone apps support this yet?

the iphone/ipod touch does have multiple touch capability

all of a sudden my DS10 is looking a little stale

saying that Rebirth works really well with the old touch screen gobook I have knocking around albeit with a tad of latency

I love rebirth but haven't had a copy of it for ages, bought this straight away when I heard about it. Much better than TechnoBox in my opinion. Still a bit fiddly but its a fucking phone, at least you can zoom in and it fits enough on the screen to program easily enough

Sorry - "ignition key"

what the hell is an ignition key?

ReBirth never needed any kind of hardware dongle, nor a serial number. ReBirth was released as freeware many years ago, by Propellerhead Software themselves.

The "ignition key" is the Propellerheads' cute name for a dongle. It ships with Record.

I'm a n00b re: Rebirth (among other things), but I have an iPhone and I have 7 bucks (for now). How hard is it to extract the audio if you compose something with the app?

Like, are you going to just be able to share some relatively useless rebirth RB-338 file with other rebirth app users (or people who have rebirth for like, OS 8 macs or something), or can you convert that to something more universal?

I'm guessing you can't really just extract a line-out very cleanly?

I don't have any idea bout what's goin on.

Yeah, I wasn't sure though on whether the iPhone has an actual line out (that is, independent from the headphone amp stage); I've heard conflicting info on this. I know you can access an iPod line out via the proprietary doc connection, but some early info on the iPhone suggested that you couldn't get a true line out. Maybe that's cleared up now-- I guess I'll have to try and see.

I've been playing physical instruments for 15 years but I'm totally new on the recording front, so I just want to see if I can get a cheap way to get quick demos together. I'm guessing if I can get an audio line out from the iPhone, I could get an adapter to split the channels to two male mono instrument level jack inputs? I've got an I/O device that will accept instrument cable inputs.

Sorry if this ain't the place to be askin'.
