Hangable Auto Bulb / Ventolin (EP + Remixes)

Recommended Posts

One of my favorites of RDJ, Hangable Auto Bulb! Pretty much started his whole "drill'n'bass" (what kind of term is that? lololol) era, followed by the RDJ Album and all.

And we've the 2nd and 3rd companion EPs to I Care Because You Do, Ventolin EP and Ventolin (Remixes)! This will be a good listen for me as I don't really pay much mind to these two EPs much, I'm excited!

Also, this marks the halfway point in the AFX Album Cycle, I hope it's been as exciting for you guys as it has been for me!

Fuck yeah. I love Hangable Auto Bulb, it's what got me into RDJ.

It's my most played selection by him, I just can't get enough of it.

Also, I love Wheeze Mix.

coppice mix

crowsmengegus mix

caharrack mix

probus mix

asthma beats mix

cylob mix

All taaassty tracks, can't wait to revisit these gems.

it's kind of funny how he chose the most unlikely (some might say the most annoying) song to be the lead single for that album. kind of like quoth on sosw got it's own single, and it's basicly just a nice repeatative techno beat with no melody. i don't know of any other musician who's done a similar thing. maybe it was just all a joke to him, andy kaufman style.

Marvanose mix, I think that's how it's spelled. I love the actual beat part of that song so much.

Does anyone have this interview? ...they've deleted it from youtube and I can't find it anywhere...

Support for the government is a Stockholm syndrome.

Hangable Auto Bulb is the most elegant , exquisite RDJ release to date. It has so many layers is unbelievable Jeff (Custodian Discount is the best example). Also , despite the "metal machine" sound it has , its very emotional and human. 10/10

P.S - I don't care for the Ventolin ep + Remixes

God, I hate Ventolin.

I like some of the "remixes" though. The middle part of Crowmengegus, Probus and Cylob Mix are sweet.

Most of them sound like something RDJ made while sitting on the toilet or in hangover or both.

I'll have to give HAB another listen, some of the tracks i couldn't really get into.

Arched Maid of course is a fucking mind-expanding tune.

Ventolin's strong points:

- Original version is classic, it's a great example of the distorted, abrasive sound that RDJ mastered.

- Remixes by Vibert and Cylob

- The "respect list" at the end

- Artwork of the release

Weak points:

- As already mentioned, most of the remixes are quite meh and simply not memorable

- The video is pretty lame, it looks like it'll be a cool and cyberpunk-ish, then ends of being 4 minutes of boring montage done by someone with the talent of a mediocre film student. Disappointing follow-up to On and by no means an indication for the awesome Aphex vids to follow.

Children Talking - Absolute classic! Maaaassssshhhhhhhheeeeeedddd pooooootttttaaaaattttooooeeesssssss. One of the best drum patterns RDJ has come up with so far. Creates a strong vibe of urgency, like that child really hates mashed potatoes. This whole EP is just brimming with a sense of emergency, like something isn't happening fast enough. Vocals in here are just legendary, section starting @ 2:10 is YEAAAAHHHHHHHH. He really destroyed that sample.

Hangable Auto Bulb - Very dark song here. As the song progresses, it seems that much darker to me. I dunno, the contrast of the drums and melody maybe? It particularly gets creepy around 2:40, with that drum pattern and melody changing...anyway, a really great synth line here, RDJ's creativity was just blowing up around this time, he was doing things that NO ONE else was doing! Great work here! THE END OF THIS IS AMAAAAZING

Laughable Auto Bulb - One of my favorite AFX songs ever. The melodies in here are so uplifting and childlike, one of the highlights of the EP. I love the introduction on this one, very in-your-face, shows his confidence.

Bit - Bit 4 is better, haha

Custodian Discount - Probably my favorite overall track on here. Drum programming is top-notch, a little stripped-down compared to Drukqs, but he was in his infant stages with the whole "spastic breaks" thing. The melody in here is unbelievable, I love love love it!! *phew* What a track, really.

Wabby Legs - This song just goes all over the place, from the slightly creepy melody in the beginning to the near-tribal beat that rises up in the second half. Awesome track though, really liking this one a lot more than I used to.

Every Day - Another fantastic vocal sample he just destroys. Very childlike melody, probably the happiest-sounding song on the EP. His mom works well on his beats, haha. Overall not much I can say here, just a great track.

Arched Maid Via RDJ - OH. MY. GOD. If you're an RDJ fan, you have to love this one. I mean, good lord. The first part is monstrous enough, but that second part? Fuhgeddaboutit. Blows my mind every time that he had his drums that tight back in '95, when everyone was still doing that 2-bar rhythmic jungle beat. 10/10 classic

Kinda tired, so review is not as great as previous weeks, but whatevert857587587y857875885

what does this even mean?

When you think of generic jungle, think of that generic little Amen chopped drum loop that everyone used. Zomby and a few others have done it all the time recently. I compare it to the "wubbb wubb bwubbbb" of dubstep these days.

Just saying that HAB seemed like RDJ's own take on jungle, where around '95 (in my opinion), it was beginning to fall flat

I like the Ventolin EP for what it is. It sounds like it's not trying to be great music or anything, just an exercise in seeing how far one can go in terms of abrasive sounds & still be catchy.

Haven't heard HAB yet.

I haven't heard the Ventolin ep.

HAB is something that I don't listen to a lot but when I do, I immensly enjoy it. Too me a lot of the tracks sound like experiments in sound more than actual 'choons' if you know what I mean.

I particualy love Every Day and Arched Maid via RDJ.

I know what you meant. I hate those 6 minute long tracks of the same damn loop, even if it's a decent and unique beat.
