Help Me Decide What Music to Play

Recommended Posts

Guest HerculesCzar

I'm a senior in high school this year and I'm DJing my schools prom. I'm having trouble choosing music, so throw some suggestions at me and I'll either play them or not play them at my discretion. There are only two requirements: 1. It has to be easy to dance to and 2. It needs to be easily grasp-able, as I'm playing this music for a crowd that, in large part, listens to shit.

Any help is appreciated.

Speaking of which, do you have a DJ name yet? I think you should be DJ Jake Gyllenhaal. And show up Prince of Persia-era Jake Gyllenhaal. The girls love him.

culture those motherfuckers with a few classic trax,

as much as i agree, prom night is really not the night to get too cultured with your playlist. Most of these people just want to hear music that makes them nostalgic for the last 4 years, then secondly their adolescent childhoods, NOT watmm's adolescent childhood from 20,000 miles away, though they're giving you some definite timeless bangers. One of the worst things about playing these sets for plebs is playing tracks you hate, but just remember you're doing a service for them, which means youre obligated to play mindblowing shit theyve never heard as you are to play shit theyve heard too much, but familiarity is key, and you know your peers better than anyone on watmm, even if that's unfortunate news for your tracklist

^This.

And most dj jobs are like this. I've played a couple of sets at my University and it's no fun at all. Most of these times it's been because they've been wanting someone to play electronic music for their 'Electro Parties' and even though I've played the most danceable music there is (Trentemøller, Modeselektor and so on) people still complain and either asked me if I could play either the same song over and over or even Disney music... like... wtf? Can you imagine how pathetic I felt when I was forced to play "Hakunamatata".

not so sure college girls qualify as adults, but i'm glad to hear you added some kaoss pad. sounds like a difficult thing to do.

i think at a point when people start asking for disney tunes, it's time to just play whatever the fuck you want anyway..

I'm so jealous. My school won't let students DJ dances.

Mine didn't either. Don't think drum n bass would have gone over well, anyway...
