Capybara Modular DSP Synth

Recommended Posts

interesting. i'm going to study art at KHM. So when i applied a student showed me the sound lab. Inside there was a Doepfer modular rig which caught my eye, a Nord Lead 2x, and she showed me this Capybara synth which she said was some fancy thing nobody ever uses.. so yeah wat can it do?

It's a modular synthesis environment, reminiscent of max/msp and other modular synthesis packages.. Basically it's a high-level graphical programming environment. You can program it to do whatever you want, if you understand dsp and synthesis. Otherwise it already comes with a lot of patches you can just explore and tweak.

k been watching a bunch of youtube videos.. so the environment Kyma X acts as GUI to the Capybara which does the number crunching right?

is there any good music doen with it? cuz the stuff on youtube was a bit shite tbh.

That's right, plus you have the option to buy incredibly expensive hardware upgrades for the Capybara unit.. I used to have access to one back when I went to skool... you could get some pretty nifty sounds out of it

Can't say off the top of my head where you would hear good samples of it. I know Richard Devine has used it but not in which tracks..+I recall some other WATMM members posting about using it a while back

The morphing effects are the most identifiable imo, particularly when used on vocal samples.

This one is a good example:

Woman to cat to baby to dog to Harley to woman to little boy.

i've always wondered about how some of the sounds on Draft 7.30 were done, example: that weird twisting piano/accordion/synth sounding thing in Tapr. i love that sound.

if any album of theirs has Kyma on it, it's this one. lot of odd 'morphy' sounding stuff on here.

has this thing been going on since before 2005?

I always thought Sublimit was done clever use of the Machinedrum UW RAM machines tho i'm having second thoughts after seeing what this beast can do

hmm. cristian vogel uses one, at his last "Never Engine" LP on Tresor (2007)

he posted screenshot of 2010 edition at his erutufon board:

frankly speaking, i thought that it was entirely nm g2, before i learned about his use of kyma @ never engine

holy shit, i'm going to check out that album. My biggest Kyma patch was probably only 1/10th that size, he must have a lot of memory cards in his capybara :emotawesomepm9:

i think, you'll be surprised, cause it is only dried 4/4 techno lol

nothing very interesting and spectacular there IMO

I swear they said 'Sublimit' was just 505. I'll look for the interview.

That track on EP7 with the granulated rambling (track 3?) sounds like Kyma granulation to me. I've used numerous algorithms from other software and when I tried some of the 'Sounds' that come with Kyma, I hit on one that immediately reminded me of the this track. It's still some of the coolest granulation of a voice that I've heard.

i don't hear anything obvious in 'minidisc' but he could be right. if i were to choose i'd say Draft 7.30, Gantz Graf or Minidisc
