Guest Scrambled Ears
Wow just saw this abortion of a movie last night. Have to say though that the atmosphere at certain parts was cool but horrifically unfaithful to the book in so many ways. Sting and Patrick Stewart were amusing. What I can't wrap my head around is how someone with no prior knowledge of Dune is supposed to do anything but turn this movie off after the first half hour. I hear a new Dune is in production...will anyone ever do it any justice? P.S. It never rains on Arrakkis...someone should kill the producer Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56162-david-lynchs-dune/ Share on other sites

gaarg
I quite enjoyed the movie. I think people that have no prior knowledge on dune can still endure until the film's end. acidphakist
I want to see a film adaptation of 'Chapterhouse Dune', my personal favorite in the canon series. They get into the mind and making of Mentats which, in my opinion, are the most unique and fascinating creation in all of sci-fi. Guest Scrambled Ears
holy shit...ok where to begin (without making this a book is better thing *but it is*) the baron harkonen is disgusting...which is not at all how his character is described. in the movie all he's concerned with is injecting spice directly into his face (what?), molesting boys, and flying around on some jetpack thing. in the book he's a wicked plotting monster (feints within feints). Although he knows Piter surpasses his data processing abilities, he is still strategically superior and never trusts him for a second...always leaving him a short rope to bargain on. And seriously what is the deal with fat Mentats with bushy eyebrows...LAME. Couldn't anyone give Lynch a better art treatment than that for a human computer!? tell me how the fremen...under the constant heat of the sun...look like a Canadian Hunting Club. And whats with the voice being able to destroy objects...? And with the finale...holy shit...to have the nerve to suggest that theyll live happily ever after when all throughout the book Paul's prescience constantly warns him of the dangers of assuming power...that he will be an imperial monster in the scope of which the universe had never before come close to experiencing. He goes on to ravage entire planetary systems! The only thing more absurd that they could have tried to make you believe was that it was going to rain...oh wait... And if all this isn't bad enough...whats with the constant voice-overs!? edit: Although I have to say the guildsmen were cool Edited May 11, 2010 by Scrambled Ears Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56162-david-lynchs-dune/#findComment-1321668 Share on other sites

baph
baron harkonen was the worst part of Lynch's Dune (both as a Dune adaptation and as a standalone film), but it's not like Lynch was trying to make some slavishly respectful adaptation in the first place. It's a fun film and it has some pretty great moments, but there seems to have been a serious disconnect between Lynch wanting to make his own film and the producers wanting to make a more standard adaptation, and Lynch lost control of the project which probably accounts for some of the x-tra cheesy bits, which are way more egregious than the non-Herberty bits. IMO. Lynch quote: Quote I started selling out on Dune. Looking back, it's no one's fault but my own. I probably shouldn't have done that picture, but I saw tons and tons of possibilities for things I loved, and this was the structure to do them in. There was so much room to create a world. But I got strong indications from Raffaella and Dino De Laurentiis of what kind of film they expected, and I knew I didn't have final cut.[22] Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56162-david-lynchs-dune/#findComment-1321670 Share on other sites

soundwave
apparently Ridley Scott all was set up to do Dune (which could have almost been a Star Wars for adults) but the death of his brother put him off and he later took on Blade Runner instead as this had the life and death themes Scott was dealing with at the time also Giger designed the amazing set pieces you can almost see where the budget runs out on Dune and it's a great shame as it starts really well then the Brian May esque music takes over the big orchestral score then it slowly declines into a jumbled pile o toss the original cinema edit really freaked me out as a child as it had some really nasty bits (the Baron hart plug scene ) that got edited out of the extended TV edit which is what you tend find around these days didn't Klaus Schulze and Eno have something to do with the soundtrack? who's doing the remake? Boxing Day
I feel sorry for Peter Berg. I remember once meeting him at a New York festival thing. He approached me and said "Hey man , Do you like Chicago hope? , (I had a Chicago hope t-shirt) , i said "Yeah it was an okay show" , he responded "Want me to sign it?" , i said - "sign what ??" , he looked at me with teary puppy eyes and said "never mind dude , enjoy the festival". Later when i got home , i looked at the t-shirt and i saw his face on it , i felt so bad that i swore on my dead dog's grave that i will go see every movie he makes. (I haven't keep that promise , i never liked that dog) Edited May 11, 2010 by Boxing Day Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Boxing Day's signature Hide all signatures I HOPE THIS MATCH NEVER ENDS - Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56162-david-lynchs-dune/#findComment-1321729 Share on other sites
