Getting someone to dance to idm

Recommended Posts

Jazz ? Probably.

I've been listening to idm for a long time now ( :emotawesomepm9: ) but i've never seen someone dance to it. I think we should try to talk someone into making a dance-video for us. Of course it would be easier to convince a breakdancer, there's a lot of breakdancable idm tracks - i'm listening to mc4 acid right now and it seem to be the perfect track for this purpose. But i tend to think it would be cooler to have some contemporary dancer dance for us. Pro Radii would make a good track for a short ballet - having several people dance is another problem.

Also i'm curious how a ballerina would dance to meltphace, which is a track that has classical-like movements without leading to pure frenzy like VSnares tracks. Yeah my BI asks for a ballerina but it seems to be an impossible goal all the more so there don't seem to be lots of classical dance related forums on the net. Finding a balerina (or a ballerino) might be a hard task - it seems like they are not really of the nerd kind.

But maybe some people on here are dancers themselves or have acquaintances that are into dance. Maybe we should look into watmm first.

Currently playing : crying in your face - that must be a goddamn good track to dance to as weel.

So what do you think?

cool. That's eutow playing in the background right ?

Well it's not a very idm track, quite repetitive actually. I'm curious to see how one can dance to more untiltedish abstract things, or even better to some flourishing aphex track : rushup edge for instance.

What this guys do is pretty cool, but it's just breakdance/aciddance. He's moving around in a funny way but the dance's actually quite detached from the music. I want to see what idm really looks like, and by idm i don't mean

do you guys never make it out to IDM shows? people get down just fine to the stuff that's fairly danceable.

Indeed , my son .

But every once in a while...I'll get an ''arms crossed show'' ( I fucking hate that shit )

i have personally seen some amazing moves busted to abstract hip-hop beats and braindance.

the more emotional and dusky sounds are what i crave when i'm out-i'm really not a fan of four/four

on the dance floor. i like the well twisted rhythms-for example-i have seen some amazing breaksteps

to scorn's music's which is not commonly thought of as b-boy fare. mbm/tino would maybe be my favorite

boogie bringers-although i have gotten down pretty fucking hard to autechre's idm proper. i remember

untilted tour was nothing but steppers in sf-everyone was up and moving all night.

:braindance:

just guess a track and I´ll get some breakdancer to do it... choose wisely, choose something that would be extremely weird (he´s not gonna see this post)... I´ll get it on youtube/vimeo

maybe David Elsewhere really is what IDM looks like, but you're just not seeing it.

First, let's define idm.

I think it's generally admitted that Bradley Strider, the DMX Krew or autechre are all part of the same subgenre : IDM. Actually they have few things in common except that they all originate from the same milieu. IDM as defined by warp and rephlex is mainly british electronica - somehow.

But to me it's more than just the geographical area of production. I don't really consider bradley's beat to be an IDM release : frankly it just sounds like techno.

IMO what defines IDM is complexity. THe more complex, the more IDM. IDM/braindance can be qualified as such if you have to listen carefully to the music in order to dance. IDM is something difficult to dance to. Thus, bands such as Gangpol Und Mit, which switch of theme and rythm every 4 bars, should be considered as IDM eventhough they have no relation with mainstream IDM.

Maybe David Elsewhere style of dancing is highly elaborated -and i'm totally capable of enjoying it- but the music he dances to can be danced "normally" (more or less). Also his style of dancing is just acid/break dance right ? These genres emerged in the 70s/80s. That's actually pretty old. I want idm(as a dance) to be something new, something that nobody has seen yet. But I'm unable to do it(although i danced to the Mt St Michel once whilst drunk and got complimented by....a ballerina). So I think it would be interesting to see how dancers with various styles would cope with IDMness. Maybe something new can emerge.

To me the main pillars of IDM are the sounds them self, and the long-term track structure. So i'm totally hot for acid dance as it's a good way to fit the synth level, but some classical/contemporary inspiration could be cool too because it would help underlining the movements of the track : dance music is usually the same pattern played over and over till the end of the song, while idm tracks tend to be more progressive, just like classical music. At least that's how i feel it but maybe i'm just bringing up the vertical vs horizontal music dilemma.

So i suggest we pick a track with a high BPM and that is not too repetitive.

My perverted mind demands some aphex (erfff). So i suggest we choose something between RDJ album and the Tuss (except the analord because they're too acid) and see what Muflontillah's contact come up with. Girl/Boy(Redruth Mix) has the advantage of being short (1:36). This way Muflontillah's contact could train a couple times before dancing in front of the camera, and we wouldn't feel guilty for consuming his time.

On my side i'll try to recruit friends from highschool who were rhythmic gymnasts and.... ballerinas but that's very unlikely i get them to dance.I really want to see a ballerina dance to meltphace, that's my perversion, i know, i'm ok with it, at least i'm not playing rapelay

Besides this is my way of dancing:

i guess you don't hear the complexity in Eutow then. just like you cannot see the IDM in David Elsewhere.

I have a video of my 8 year old niece headbanging and freaking out to mt michels mont, but I need a program to increase the brightness and convert it from 3gp to something better.
