RoR was a fad scripting language if I ever saw one...

i very disagree.

web2.0 was a fad, for sure - powered by AJAX, RSS, ruby/drupal/$CMS_OF_CHOICE (edit: and godawful flash when badly done, i guess...) but the goal is HTML5, innit? and the HTML5 standard draws lots of inspiration from the sort of bolt-on functionality the above are providing.

I do a lot of freelance PHP stuff. PHP is a nice language and all, but when a non-programmer or idiot uses it they tend to make a real mess. Often I get called in because it's a rat's nest, hundreds of lines, and they need someone with a clue to untangle the mess. If Ruby is better about not letting the coder be "sloppy" then I might go learn it. Is it?

I write in ASP. What I can do in 15 minutes with a response object - would take any of these new school object oriented programmers hours, if not days, to accomplish. I'm an old school web programmer, and I like it that way, back in my day, kids didn't think twice about getting on my lawn...

I need a rocking chair icon.

i used to work with an hungarian web dev. one of the sharpest programmers i ever knew, but he was obsesses with WPF (windows presentation framework) and silverlight and other microsoft alternatives to nicer, open source things. never could understand it, but lots of people are oddly the same.

people get to know a platform, never use others, move in their furniture, start a garden, have some kids... all the eggs in one basket. so, anyone suggesting another is a direct threat to their livelihood and way of existence. i run into a lot of these people.
