honestly this makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. i am worried where it is going to lead. i don't believe humans are capable of wielding such power.

this for me is comparable to the creation of the atom bomb or countless other major downward turning points in human history

Craig Venter is serious business. I don't really see the significance of this as they don't have the capability to design new genes so they will just be copying the code of existing genes from one species and putting into another species, which is exactly the same as transfecting genes the way they have been doing for years. Still impressive that they managed it I suppose.

Saw this on the news today. Feels uncomfortable too.

I fear to think it may happen as with nuclear energy. First a great discovery and then it kills hundred thousand people in a few seconds. Every discovery has it's good and bad sides and men will never learn how to deal with them just as he won't stop discovering new stuff. This theme can have multiple interpretations.

EDIT: i remember reading about a contract with some oil company too. Money starts making its moves early in this field. Another fact that reinforces my doubts.

Science has always been pushed forward by making money, you could argue against the invention of the wheel with the same train of thought.

These things make news because they sound like big news if you don't understand the fine details or ignore the caveats

you can see a crowd of these fuckers with the naked eye. there's something exceptionally creepy and unheimlich about viruses.
