Windowlicker/Come To Daddy

Recommended Posts

I know the new Metz track de-railed last week's, cause I completely forgot to start this week's! Here we have RDJ's two most popular EPs, the summer soundtrack Windowlicker and the rough/breaksy/cold/funny Come To Daddy. Have fun!

The Two "Mainstream" EPs (That doesn't take anything away from them)

Windowlicker - 9.5/10 , Window and Equation are fucking classic , Nannou is a good track , but i have to be in the "Mood" to enjoy it.

Come To Daddy - 9.7/10 , Every track are classic (Except the Mummy Mix - I hate that one)

Both releases are gold.

Windowlicker has the better title track. Sounding like 25 million light years ahead of its time.

Come to Daddy is proberbly the best tune you only ever have to listen once LoL. That in itself is just another reason why I think Aphex Twin is a total fucking genuis. How can you make a track so pin-point perfectly brilliant that once is enough? I remember seeing an interview with Trent Reznor and him commenting on CTD. Smiling he said he felt like giving up music when he heard CTD, because some chap from Cornwall had totaly nailed (sorry) the sound and track he has been searching for in his head most of his life. I respect Trent for being honest about that. I watched another documentry on guitar players and it was the same for Jeff Beck and company when they saw Hendrix live at the 100 Club, they all had their heads in their hands at the end of the gig. Richard wiped the floor with so many artists the day it was released, but he still thinks it was a death metal jingle joke that got out of hand. Yeah righto Rich...

So then there's the legendary title track which I adore but never play, so what makes this so special? Easy. Flim, BBB, IZ-US and most of all To Cure a Weakling Child, Contour Regard. This version of To Cure a Weakling Child would be in my top 10 of his tracks of all time, and very near the top.

Yeah, Come to Daddy is the most aptly named EP of all time. Aphex fucking rules!

PS. Reason why Come to Daddy is the most aptly named title is Daddy is English slang for king, boss or as the Americans might say Don. Just thought I would mention this as anyone else might not know! Not sure if Richard is using it in this context.....

"You've got so many machines, Richard" :)

Both top. Add ventolin and the Bulbs.

The über Remix was Reznors "At the heart of it all", the longer version. So dark. Loved Fantastische 4 - Krieger as well.

Ventolin was a revolution.

This is 1000 years ago, I'm old, but the tracks are still lightyears ahead of today.

BTW, what's the context of "motherfucking daddy" in []pushers "Come on my Selector"?

Windowlicker - What can I say? The biggest summer anthem of all time for me. Riding in a car with those processed vocals blasting is just heavenly. This entire song screams party to me. The second half really brings it in w/the dirty lo-fi goodness. And how can this be talked about without the video? The beginning is really what's the best for me, w/the two black guys babbling about, and that crazy track they play on the stereo! All in all, fantastic song, timeless.

∆Mᵢ⁻¹ = −∂ ∑ Dᵢ[n] [∑ Fⱼᵢ[n−1] + F extᵢ[n⁻¹]] - Funnnnky glitch madness, and probably the closest RDJ has gotten to Autechre, at least what I can think of at the moment. It gets glitchier and glitchier until it erupts to just noise pretty much, but somehow it's perfect.

Nannou - Made this for his girlfriend at the time, how sweet. :3 It's a really good song, but I almost never listen to it. It's in the same vein as Avril 14th for me, in terms of listenability and popularity.

(just for kicks) Windowlicker (Acid Edit) - Just from the name of this song, I expected greatness, and what I got was just a pretty cool song. The beginning is just wonderful w/the kicks and percussion grooving, very funky. Disappointing, compared to the other tracks here.

I believe I was 6, lol.

I still haven't quite gotten into the Come to Daddy EP. There are some good tracks on there, but at the same time it sort of feels like something that wasn't supposed to be released, a collection of highlights from a period of experimenting with a computer.

I do enjoy Windowlicker quite a bit. And I find the demo off of the Japanese EP particularly interesting, in that it's catchy but at the same time isn't particularly mind-blowing. If I had came across it on somebody's Soundcloud or Myspace page, I probably wouldn't think twice about it. I guess it shows what can be done with a track if enough time & skill is put into it.

Guest Masonic Boom

I knew I missed a week in there.

Ah yes, the Imperial Phase. Every decent pop star has to have one. You know, where they go a bit bonkers and off the rails and blast off into the stratosphear leaving their peers in the dust with, erm, mixed results. When it's good, it's very very good, but when it's bad it's ... ooh let's not go there.

Kind of agree with RDJ's assessment of Come To Daddy. It's kind of a throwaway joke track that got out of hand. But at the same time, it sometimes takes listening to the throwaway tracks to realise that an artist is, actually, a genius, that they can toss off something like this as a joke. (The Little Lord Fauntleroy mix is probably my favourite, though. It manages to be both over the top creepy and silly and yet at the same time sublimely beautiful.)

In any case the B-sides are just so >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the A-side it's not even funny. I mean, Flim? Bucephalus Bouncing Ball? IZ-US?!?!?!? These are the B-sides? For any lesser artist these tracks would be their a-number-one hang-it-on-the-wall career defining pieces of art but RDJ is like "pffft, will these do?" like he's blowing his nose and magic comes out. It's the apparent effortlessness of this stuff that really blows me away.

I mean, maybe this is more to do with Image than anything else, but that Reznor quote above does kind of explain it for me. OK, I'm not a NIN fan at all, but every track of his I listen to, I have this impression that he's really *slaving* over it and working really hard to get it to sound quite that tortured. And Mr D.James just gives the impression of being this sort of maniacal child who goes down in the basement and mucks around for a bit then takes his headphones off and it's all "OMG LISTEN TO THIZ, YOU GUYz!!!!!!!!!11eleven" and it's the most beautiful and insane thing you've ever heard.

What’s your relationship with Aphex Twin like?

Ninja: I’m friends with him. He’s a bit of a weirdo. We were talking for ages, before I stayed at his house in Newquay. We were trying to get music together but he doesn’t collaborate. So when we hooked up, the first thing I said was, ‘If we make music together, I want to make pop music with you.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah that’s cool.’ I said I wanted to make big pop music like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

Guest Londonskater

Nannou is epic.

Flim, too.

IZ-US

Bucephalus bouncing ball

...and the maths equation track.

Two killer releaes - Although I do like CTD, I skip the title track and if I ever do feel like listening to it, I usually watch the video.

I wish that intro background music from Windowlicker was available out there...

Nannou is better at 33 than at 45 imo

edit: listening now at <33 rpm (I guess it's around 25) and still sounds great, it really needs pitch adjustment but you can't have it all

funny this topic pops up again just now as i am rediscovering a big part of afx'z discography, windowlicker being among that.

i thought i had overplayed the title track in the past bc i got the ep right when it came out, just getting into electronic stuff. however, since it's prob been years since i listened to it consciously and my ears have grown quite a bit it blew me away when i gave it a spin over ye olde headphones a few days ago. it's even better than i remembered, soo good!! and yes, decades ahead of its time. so clean yet alive, bouncy and rigid, cold'n'sexy.. fantastic.

also: little lord fauntleroy is the only track i can think of at the moment that almost got me falling off my chair laughing as i heard those crazy vocals for the first time. ahh. youth!

(it feels like this although thinking about it i was about 25 then. afx really is a wizard. :flower: )
