keyboard working but rotary encoders have stopped working

bit of a weird one this -

win7/ableton 8.0.1 recognises the controller and ASIO works. i can enter note data live and in the piano roll.

but i can't assign knobs to things like sends or levels when i rclick - assign MIDI.

i used to be able to do this just fine with XP/ableton 7. i can assign controls just fine in i.e. NI massive, or other VSTs.

am i missing something blindingly obvious?

have you set up your midi controller in the preferences as both "track" and "remote"? track lets you play/record notes, remote lets you write and record automation.

Yeah, sounds like the "Remote" button in Ableton's preferences is off. I've been fooled myself by this before.
