I did something like this back in middle school with a jpeg. I kept spinning it around in Windows Image Viewer until it was nothing but static. It was like one of those picture frames filled with multi-coloured sand.

As mentioned above, JPG compression for images, but if you're talking about a digital video, I assume exporting/compressing a clip over and over would have a similar effect. Just re-open the compressed clip each time instead of starting form the original.

I have a little java program a friend of mine scripted, he called it filescrambler, it damages files and with some filetypes it results in funny stuff, if you can still open them. I used it here:

I decided to try this technique for myself. Here are two images, a PNG, and the result of this PNG being compressed into a JPEG 55 times:

This is the kind of thing that happens to the human body during the aging process. Have a good think about that.

I really like this. Do you know where I could find more of this kind of stuff? I don't like the purely abstract glitchy stuff so much but this was highly entertaining.
