Blu-ray for the computer

Recommended Posts

i'm wondering when they are coming out with a recordable blu-ray drive for computers. is this out yet

the thing i worry about is i have so much music on my computer what would i do if my ext hd died? i don't think you can tell if it's about to die, i didn't install anything on it just mp3s

maybe i should buy a cheaper ext hd to put mp3s on and then put it in the closet for emergencies...

how much can a blu-ray hold? i wonder if they'll come up with archive blu-rays...

halp!

it's the same as cd/dvd technology before it. the longer you wait, the cheaper the burners and media get. sit back and watch the prices fall...

funnily enough, the other day i was looking at a Bluray drive for my computer, but decided against it at the moment due to the relatively high cost of a burner drive at the moment. i'm not gonna settle for anything less than a burner drive, so i'm gonna have to wait for prices to come down.

Never put your second backup in the same physical space Yek. Put it elsewhere (at work, friend's house/etc..)

And forget about putting data on stupid plastic/aluminium discs. They will be useless soon.

an external hd will be 1) cheaper by GB 2) take a lot less space and 3) you can synch your backups

external HD are so dirt cheap, 2TB for a hundred bucks nowadays I think? You'll need at least 50 Blu-Ray discs for that. And a recorder. Seriously, all discs are obsolete now. Computers don't even come with them anymore.

So yes, two places physically at all time. This is the basis of backup. You backup your stuff here, and you have a perfect copy of that backup somewhere else. That way whenever there is a problem, you can switch and buy a new one.

If you're looking at this for backup purposes, I wouldn't recommend. Media like this is not ideal for archiving / long term storage.

I would recommend external hard drives and also an online storage solution. For instance, buy two external drives and subscribe to a cheap service like JungleDisk (amazon). You can't really trust anything so have a few different distinct spaces and coordinate/mirror your backups across them.
