Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Recommended Posts

Yes, I saw it in the Glasgow Film Festival. It had a double bill with 1.1 then the Europe Premier of this!

And yes it was good!!! awaiting part 3 eagerly!! trailer at the end!!!

yes, kind of, i saw it and thought it was very lacking.

it has more action, less melodrama, bad timing.. i.e. much fast forwarded.

some of it is very awkwardly bad even:

Hellsing is another main pleasure of mine :D :spiteful:

according to wikipedia, the NGE franchise has made over 1.6 billion U.S. dollars since 1995!

i didn't realize it was such a massive financial success.

and then there's the emo cut cut cut! (at least that's what the band-aid on the blue girl's and Asuka's arms seem to imply… )

"the blue girl" lol...

anyway, that's not why she's bandaged.

If it isn't in the NZ international film festival this year I'm gonna be severely disappointed. I thought the first one was definitely inferior to the series in terms of story and pacing but it was so pretty! I want to see more of the pretty.

DVD is out now so hopefully a good fan sub should be out soon (if it isn't already).

the first one played here in theaters shortly and then was released on DVD. i'll be buying this one as i did the first. i'm psyched.

waiting for the blu-ray to hit US shores, which should be about another 2 years. grrr

This was really good. Like 1.0 the angels are redone and look way better. There's a lot of new stuff this time around, in fact, they completely changed the story arc. I can tell their setting up for a completely different ending.

  • 3 weeks later...

I watched this last night.

It was pretty bad. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't somewhat entertained, because it's colourful and some of the animation is nice (but too much CGI... mecha don't look cool unless they're hand drawn... Unit 02's introduction was amazing) but was it moving? Not by a long shot.

Some of it is literally laughable (actually a lot of my entertainment came from us making fun of it). There's these ultra cheesy musical bits, horribly sentimental without any sense of irony or subtext. All the characters were underdeveloped:

And probably the worst thing was the pacing! I thought the pacing in the first film was bad but I thought well.. this one is a little bit longer, maybe they would have improved on that. But it's even worse. Sure it's got more slow bits which is good... but instead of using these slower parts to help develop story and character, they're mostly pointless time wasters. Even these slower parts are still too fast paced. The pacing in the film reminds me of this:

I knew I wouldn't like the film as much as the series but this really was a big disappointment.

it's like Alien or Jurassic Park - they should never have started the milking.

I don't mind it so much with Rebuild though because it's a retelling, hence the events of Rebuild don't exist within the same continuity. It's like... when George Lucas made episode 1, 2 and 3, it kinda of made the rest seem a little less cool because it implied that those events fit together. But with Rebuild, you can ignore them... it's easier for me to ignore the fact that they exist.

I agree about the score, it did feel silly but I liked the fact that there was faster pacing and less whiny emo Shinji. The director knows people watching this have already seen the series, there's no need to rehash the characters. The new story arc and new angel design is what I find interesting.

Shinji having a bit more guts was definitely a welcome change... he didn't just moan, he got angry and did something about it! I don't agree with the idea that you have to see the series first to understand it. Any remake should be able to stand alone. I just can't enjoy something like this... part of what makes a story good is not just the series of events, but how those events unfold. Otherwise, you may as well just read the synopsis on IMDB instead of watching the whole thing.

I mean... Mari is just pointless.. I don't know who she is, what she's doing, there wasn't enough screen time to explain any of that and I didn't care either cos all she did was stick her arse in front of the camera and talk about her breasts. Characters like Asuka and Kaji are amazingly written in the show, they're subtle and very well rounded, but in this film there was nothing to them at all. If I hadn't seen the show first I would have thought the same of them as I would have of Mari.

Also, you can't even fill in the gaps with the show because they act so different. Asuka doesn't seem to have any attraction to Shinji in this film when she clearly does in the show. Shinji doesn't seem to have much to do with her either... so why'd they replace Touji with her? It just turned the most gut wrenching moment of the series into one that was just loud and kinda boring.
