Oh how I miss my trips to Amoeba. I think I spent 3 hours once in the electronic section alone!

I would also make a point of going to the Denny's down the street afterward because Rodney Bingenheimer would be there everytime. :cisfor:

He's like 5 feet tall. The first time I saw him there was in the bathroom. I was like "What's this woman doing in front of the urinal?"

I feel you guys. Back before the days of living on my own I already had a great job and few enough bills that I could spend hundreds on music every month without batting an eyelash. I love those plastic frames the CDs are in at Amoeba because I could just load up my arm with as many as I could carry. The sound they make as they click up against eachother as you sort through them on the shelf is sublime. There are few more optimistic moments than while thumbing through the electronic music section at Amoeba album by album.

Alas adult responsibilities have held me back from visiting the old haunt, but I can hear her beckoning. I do have a bunch of old CDs to trade in ... That can be my excuse.

Don't they have shopping baskets there too? I remember filling those up on a couple occasions.

I remember loving the used electronic section - coming across some old CDs and vinyl that I'd searched for years prior and never found. And then paying just a few bucks for them, because a lot of electronic music is considered worthless once it's the slightest bit dated and forgotten.

Dunno about the shopping baskets... never used one.

Yeah, it seemed like the Used and New electronic music was intermingled. Would find loads of unknown releases there for cheap and buy based on the cover art for a thrill.

amoeba of course. i've never gone to an amoeba and walked away disappointed. LA might have the best one.

^^ and yeah, <3 the clickety-clack of CDs in those preventative devices... and sometimes you'd have to start sliding them onto your free arm as well, trying not to approach the checkout in that quasi-christ pose that such a maneuver asks you to adopt

yeah, it is the place to go for music fiends,,, i;ve been a few times. I take an empty record bag that i can sling around my back and just fill it up with delicious wax stuffs. the amoeba in sf is really fantastic as well, i am kinda of scared to go there this week.!!! also, it helps if you go with someone else that is equally obsessed with music or alone, as it is really a multi-hour thing,, i give my self 2-4 hours minimum per visit.

the only downside to amoeba is that its employees almost always know exactly how valuable their merchandise is. so, you're not going to find SAW2 brown for $5. instead you'll find rare stockhausen CDs for $75. expensive rarities notwithstanding, amoeba's prices are generally very fair compared to just about every other shop. i miss having music money so much.

Wow that place was huge! I ended up getting minutemen, mc5, erykah badu, Todd rundgren, Joanna newsom, and oversteps. Wish I had brought more cash

you were there yesterday? me too. what time? i was there from 9:30 pm to close.

not always true that they know what they've got. i once found a Toytronic Num Num clear 10" there for $4. Also once picked up a Qubism CD on Em:t there for $35 and flogged it for $100. if you got back right now and look in the vinyl Misc. B section you'll find a B12 Electro-Soma ltd. orange vinyl 2xLP for $8. sleeve is pretty beat up though.

yesterday picked up (all used):

The Orb - The Dream $7

The Orb - Bicycles & Tricycles $7

Stars of the Lid - Avec Laudenum $9

Venetian Snares - 7 Sevens.med EP $3

Aphex Twin - ...I Care Because You Do (original Warp pressing CD. such a nerd cause i so have the Sire one too) $8

haha, if anyone in LA is going to snatch up those sorts of deals, it's probably going to be you. i don't dig and dig like i did years ago -- just a browser now, mostly. but i've enjoyed a few amoeba robberies of my own (mostly in SF). dopplereffekt's fascist state for $10. earliest OOP planet mu stuff for just a few bucks. more jazz nuggets than i can count. but for the most part, i'd see something rare that i couldn't justify buying and think, "yeah, they'll eventually get that. no problem."

The eventual, inevitable urge to pee is the limiting factor to my visits!

total have to plan all that in advance,, limit liquid intakes before and have a jug of liquids going on during the visit.

fuck that, you just run across the street to the Jack In The Box, have them buzz you into the bathroom, or knock and have the homeless guy that's already in there let you in, get it done and run back. solved.

Guest maantecaaa!!!

Several years back I looked all over the place for Bodgan's Samurai Math Beats. Couldn't find it no matter how hard I tried(even on the internets). The first time I went to Amoeba it was just sitting there on the display shelf...for $8.99

Goddamn do I miss that place.
