A song that no one on watmm knows about..

So I've always had a kick showing my non-electronica-minded friends the light of "underground artists" (i.e. fly lo, mike slott, bibio, lone, j dilla, madlib, aphex twin, , haha this is already giving me the lols). Anyways, since I'm so fortunate to be part of a community that actually shares and discusses and KNOWS what's good non-mainstream music, I'm curious to see what members have uncovered over their years of searching the murky depths of the internet. An artist or a song that you think is a goddamn gem and should be known to all!

The rule is simple:

Post a link to a song that you think no one of watmm would know about, but is worthy of the community's recognition. Or you atleast think is epic shit

Can be some friend's friend of a friend's friend, some hobo from downtown, Bruce Haack, a nun from peru with an 808, whatever!

I'll get things started:

This one goes back all the way to my high school daze..I know many of you have heard The Mars Volta, but I think their Tremulant ep is extremely overlooked. It's a great album and the epic drum solos and guitar glitches are righteous as fuck. Pretty much got me into a ton of artists I listen to today. Ok ok, without further ado -

Anybody familiar with Nic Endo? She was responsible for all the noise and electronics when Atari Teenage Riot performed live. She also has two solo studio release and is touring around with Alec Empire again. She's fucking hot too...

moderately popular post-hardcore band i went to high school with, they actually got kind of big in germany briefly so someone might have heard of them if they're german. when i say "moderately popular" and "big" i mean in that particular scene, though.

i was gonna link hassle hound because they're awesome but a.) nothing on youtube but a cell phone video of them playing in a tiny polish club and b.) i was introduced to them by future girlfriend, so that's at least one person who's heard of them.

SPK are great but I prefer Lustmord's solo stuff. SPK sorta became INXS after a while there

SPK are great but I prefer Lustmord's solo stuff. SPK sorta became INXS after a while there

yeah the pre-synth pop spk is the best for sure, and i dont know exactly what material lustmord was involved with, but he's great too, black star is a favourite.

but i love the spk albums, information overload unit, leichenschrei, zamia lehmanni and auto de fe

My mate at work is into his old school English punk/Oi, and lent me quite a lot of it. He was a teenager/early 20's when that was all kicking off. Real working class hatred LoL. A lot of it is patriotic and veers close towards the right-wing which isn't really my cup of tea.

A lot of it isn't that great but some shines. I don't think anyone will like it here.

My pick would be Roy Harper. Albums produced and played with Jimmy Page and David Gilmore but never sold any records, When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease is a shining example.

very not electronic but hawksley workman (was) one of the best pop/rock singers/composers/instrumentalists/lyricist. his last few cds have been complete shit but "The Delicious Wolves" and "Lover/Fighter" are glorious releases. as far as i know he played most every part on those tracks.

also saw him live thrice and was beyond impressed. fantastic guitarist with a ridiculous vocal range, he does a drum solo that basically shows up his drummer. mr lonely (his pianist) has a daughter (Sarah Slean) who is also decent. nothing as profound as hawksley though.

Chances are someone will of heard this, especially if they're familiar with Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Tenniscoats and related groups. The entire album ("Human is Music" 2003) is just magic. A pretty sad listen once you know DJ Klock killed himself just a year after its 2006 rerelease. Similar melancholy and loose, amateur playing throughout as you'd hear in all those Majikick groups but there really doesn't seem to be a single misplaced note.
