Deerhunter - Halycon Digest

I've been playing Deerhunter a lot lately, they get better and better with time and for me are more durable than Atlas Sound. Also some nice freebie news here (scroll down a tad) if you don't already know about it. The new single's pretty nice, and the unused demo tracks are not too bad at all as their ambient pieces go.

it's a pop album. if you liked where microcastle was going then you'll probably like it. if you're hoping they return to cryptograms (a weak album imo) style ambient rock, you'll be disappointed. helicopter, desire lines and earthquake are the highlights for me, but i'm sure some of the other tracks will grow on me. there are a couple duds (sailing is bradford solo and it's about three minutes longer than it needs to be) but overall i think it's their most cohesive album.

yeah this is me I guess. I was never a big fan of Microcastle, even the tracks that I loved from that album (ex -nothing ever happened) were the ones that sounded like Cryptograms.

Ive only listened to Halycon Digest once and I am a bit disappointed on my first listen. "Desire Lines" is great though.

i still prefer atlas sound to deerhunter. but even then, i'm more in the pop/logos camp then the ambient/let the blind... camp. i think bradford cox is probably the best songwriter working today, but some quality control would be nice on these albums. i still don't think his solo stuff or his band stuff has produced a truly great record.

i started with cryptograms. honestly i think its just ok, nothing i was dying to keep going back to. i didnt spend a lot of time on microcastles.

i think i like the atlas sound record better as well but only really half of it. the best song on the record for me is the one with panda though.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaat that track (Coronado) was an instant fave. Great saxophone right there. the rest of the album is solid too.

I'd love to see Atlas Sound put out an entirely ambient album though (like the last track on Let the Blind lead...)

haven't got round to this yet. not a huge fan of deerhunter's floatier/noiser bullshit, loved the more poppy tunes on microcastle tho... saw them live at heaven earlier in the year and it was lovely. apparently this record's moved back into a floatier/noisier idiom, so i just haven't bothered to check it out. anyone wanna sell me on it?
