I probably won't see this. I saw "I Stand Alone" 10 years ago and thought it was amazing but passed on "Irréversible" (I know I know).

I just don't know if I can handle shocking ultra-violence in movies anymore but I figured a lot of you punks might be into this.

if the whole thing flickers like that trailer I'll have a migraine in no time.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

It looks pretty good, but I'm not really the biggest fan of his use of camera-movement, editing etc. to make the viewer physically ill. Feels like a cheap gimmick on top of a story. I guess it's cool in a strictly film-tech POV, but not really cool as a viewer.

style over substance is a valid criticism when it comes to noe. he seems to want to (consciously or unconsciously) merge high art and exploitation.. an interesting concept, but hes not always successful.. kubrick seems to be a favorite of his i think that theres some similarity. the main criticism of kubrick is that he was all technical ability and no soul. i think you might be able to say something similar about noe.. although i might argue that (as with kubrick) meaning can be derived from the sheer amount of technical effort and ability (if that makes any sense). only time will tell if hes a serious artist or just simply the king of eurotrash.. at least his films are interesting to look at, which is more than i can say about most.. 'irreversible' wasnt as good as 'i stand alone'...

Soundtrack looks really enticing too. Apart from Noe's staple Thomas Bangaltar theres Cristian Vogel, Throbbing Gristle, Alvin Lucier, BJ Nilsen & Stillupsteypa, Coil, LFO etc..

Just got out of the theatre. This is Gaspar Noe's existential movie. Good, not great, not bad. Think Irreversible, just more stroboscopic, colourful and flashy. Epileptic would be the right word, regarding the aesthetics.

The story of a sister and her brother living in Tokyo. The brother's a neighbourhood drug dealer, the sister is a lap dancer.

First 30 minutes of the film are awesome, you think it's gonna be the movie of the year. The opening scene (or so): the brother smokes DMT and you get to actually live the trip for 6 entire minutes. Spectacular visuals. Then I'm not gonna spoil it but this first part of the film is great.

The following hour gets lenghty. The film is kinda slow, it's not as tight as Irreversible. However, view it like a drug trip. No need for me to say it, it's the kind of movie that imposes itself. Either you're in it or you get out of the room, which by the way happened to some members of the audience, just walking out after 10, 30 and 1 hour and half. It's actually a mesmerizing drug trip. Last hour gets better.

The camera keeps filming from above, like a surveillance camera, but spinning around, 360 degrees. It sometimes is a bit nauseating, but you get used to it. Lots of cool ideas and nice shots, like a vagina being penetrated, filmed from the inside.

Bottom line, the plot is pretty skim, just like Irreversible, the thing is that this one is not as tight and lasts for 2 hours 40 minutes. Weirdly enough, it reminds me of 2001, that kind of drug trip. Not as good obviously, but the comparison is fair.

Some mildly disturbing scenes, some useless ones. It could have been shorter. There's a salient desire to shock coming from the director, but I don't mind that.

Noe's emphasizes the bleakness of life (see title). It's a very negative look on life. Life, death and despair. But don't go for the plot, you will be disapointed. I can clearly see how some of you are gonna find it crappy but I thought it was good, taken as a drug trip. The trip is enhanced by the soundtrack, the darkest ambient ever.

Fucking intense, in a slowly crawling way.

7.5/10

edit: oh, it must be clear by now that you need to see it in a theater.

I just watched irreversible last night (for the first time), and noticed a 2001 poster in alex's apartment (or was it marcus'?), and also its reference in the credits at the "beginning."

Thanks for reminding me that, I feel better about my comparison now. :flower:

Is there a scene in that movie as disturbing as that club scene + extinguisher from Irreversible? It still fucking haunts me all those years later. Not the rape scene, that one did nothing for me... but the realism of that guy's head + agony moaning = I have that image for the rest of my life.

'Cause Irreversible is a great movie, everything else I like, but I can't watch that movie again because of that.

Have you watched the making off on the DVD ? Once you see the making off of the extinguisher scene, it becomes less haunting. Probably the only therapeutic making off I've ever seen.

Psychedelic porn scenes.

I really liked the chakra pron idea, with flows of energy emanating from the navel chakra. But there was no need to put as many (soft) porn scenes, was kinda pointless.
