cover of mandy moore - candy

that was awesome, and pretty accurately reflected the weird fuzzy memory that video left in my brain some odd years ago. mandy moore was so damn fine (also like 17 i think, errr uhh)

i kept waiting for a beat to drop though. maybe not what you're going for, but the rhythmic aspects of the video (dance scenes, quick camera cuts) made a strong beat seem pretty appropriate.

anyway, cool remix!

Certainly wouldn't call it a "cover" more like a "version". Trippyish. Not really sure how to react.

Hmm... I did a cover of this like a year ago that i never finished. Maybe i never should have. Perhaps my thoughts leaked out to the watmm massive.

God i loved this song when it came out (and still do). =D

luke: she was actually 15, on the mtv making the video they showed how they towed the car along because she couldn't legally drive. and re: drums, probably would've been a good idea to have sorted those out first, but I did the synths with lots of sort of woozy bits that threw things off a little, and then whenever I plugged in any sort of drums it just sounded completely wrong. I should probably take another crack at that.

thanks for listening + the comments y'all. tho I don't see what's wrong with calling this a cover. it's different, sure, but I tried to emulate as much of the original's music as I could. I think it's closer to the original than the sorts of things that are like "x artist plays y", like that one fennesz track that doesn't sound like a beach boys song until you hear the version with the vocals and you have that "oh shit that actually works" moment. btw if you haven't heard it, it's in this interview

oh and he calls em covers too.... ah I love semantics, and I'm just curious about what peoples criteria is for what a cover is (and jump at the opportunity to link people to that fennesz track), I am grateful for the listens and comments, really.

15? ffs, now i feel kinda weird. but she is hot as hell in that video, biting her lip and being all around-the-same-age-i-was when that video came out. ok. i think i talked myself out of the guilt. :pedobear:

i think you're safe to call this a cover. i've done some roy orbison covers that were way farther off the mark than this track goes. maybe people just want you to call it a remix since it's electronic? who knows.

it's brilliant in the way it kinda ridicules the culture/values the original stands for. it shows the actual sickness behind the original. reminds me of that opening scene of blue velvet where something similar happens (but not in the technical sense).

Perhaps I was wrong then. It sounded like you just ran the original song thru a bunch of fx. How did you go about making it?

I used some software to convert a wav of the song into midi information, and compared that with a midi I downloaded off the internet and did a bunch of tweaking on it to get it close to the musical composition of the original song and then used variations of that midi into a few fm8 patches and one or two other vst's.

oh and then I got really drunk and sang all sexy like with breathy vocals and shit, and then pitched that up when I remembered I can't really sing that well.

I really couldn't possibly imagine why you wouldn't have just done that because that's exactly what the result sounds like. Seems like you went through a lot of work to make it sound just like you ran the track through some pitch shifting/time stretching layered manipulations and maybe some weird vst's.

If you really did reconstruct it then my mind is blown for multiple reasons.
