Obviously the techniques and technology isn't there yet, but got to start somewhere. There was a time when heart surgery was out of the question and after many tries and deaths later, they finally made it to a rather safe and routine procedure that has saved countless of lives. Babysteps.

function. there's a lot you can't do properly when you've got a giant gaping hole where your nose and mouth should be. even a flap of grotesque looking cadaver-skin helps you do those things. like eating, salivating, basic stuff you wouldn't think face-flesh would be important for but totally is.

He can't close his mouth surely? That'll be host to a whole load more issues.

from what I heard on the radio yesterday this guy could not eat or breath on his own before getting the face transplant. so it's a bit scary, but it's a lot more functional than his old one. Also, they are currently expecting that over the next couple years he will regain something like 90% of muscle movement in his face (now he has very little obviously).

having just been to spain I can confirm that (almost) every girl there looks like that.
