Cubase 5 annoyances

Pretty please, could someone please explain why Cubase still don't read .flac files?

I mean, why? Yes, I've googled around for unofficial .flac support in Cubase, but it's just not there (or not even possible to implement without having Mr. Steinberg at your door).

It's 2010. Flac is the most widely spread lossless format around. The very fact that they still haven't implemented .flac support makes my tics go all crazy and shit. You know, my left shoulder gives this bop every two seconds, my head shakes violently to the left once a second, etc.

Here's the deal: Whenever I want to sample one of my .flac files I have to convert the motherfucker from .flac to .wav in another program.

But why?

That's the bottom line:

Why?

Flac is still compressed right?

I still use SX3 anyway and see no need to download Cubase 5 for free

Yes, .flac is compressed.

Imagine .flac being a zipped down .wav.

It's still lossless, and it's still a perfect copy, but it's zipped (in varying degrees).

In soundforge it takes me literally about 11 seconds to convert a file like flac to wav. Why not just do that? In order for Cubase to efficiently handle a compressed file like that it would have to uncompress it anyway. But I guess it would be nice for lazy people like you if it auto converted it to wav in the sample rate and bit rate your using.

Foobar reads .flacs just as fast as .mp3s, so why shouldn't Cubase do the same?

It's all about workflow, man. Ever heard about that?

If you have an idea, you want it realized as soon as possible, right?

Pah, yeah that is pretty rubbish especially as (the free) Reaper has allowed you to stick flacs on the timeline natively for years. Come on cubase stop being a bloated mess of a programme and do something useful for a change....

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

lol confidentially I just started using Reaper tonight because its so efficient... 10mbs? can definitely run more VSTs at a lower buffer rate for lots of devices to use live. Reaper is pretty rad but I'm definitely still going to record in Cubase... I think

How come, are we talking midi or audio ? (I only use it for the latter so I wouldn't know if midi recording were bum or not !)

I'm very used to editing audio in cubase sx3 and have no complaints with cubase along with reason rewired through for actual programmed, edited, multi tracked slow calculated recording. Reaper is really nice for live midi to VST stuff with the CPU efficiency I can load a bunch of VSTs at once for multiple songs/lots devices for jamming improv. The mixer tab in reaper is really nice for quick volumizing along with the way you can quickly turn off change certain effects on virtual instruments. Its really nicely laid out.

I might adopt Reaper for recording as well but I will probably just stick to many 3 years of experience editing recordings in cubase and just use Reaper for an efficient, intuitive midi to vst/rewired reason infrastructure controller.

Who knows though I'm still revising my live setup right now gotta keep learning all the possibilities with everything. I will probably get to know Reaper really well just for trying to figure out how to make the most of it for quick live tricks an end up deciding to use it for recording as well.
