My Internet Has Stopped Working

Recommended Posts

Guest Scrambled Ears

So the kids who I leech internet from upstairs stopped paying their bill which means i get this http://memberservices.optonline.net/garden/walled_garden.html message anytime I try to nav anywhere. Strangely, a few sites including WATMM still work. I would have avoided this mess a while ago but im only subletting from a friend for a few months so it wouldn't make much sense to have my own connection. What I'm wondering is that clearly since there's some sort of internet functionality is it possible that I could just block optimum in terminal and have access? I would like to play some Starcraft. Thank you friends.

This means they know you're leeching off them, that message is to bide them some time whilst they figure out what to do with you, whilst still limiting your access but not completely. It's really very clever of them, they are probably going to drill a minute hole through your head, via your ears, one side to the other, so that no one notices for sometime that you're dead and not just sleeping.

WATMM is all you need :)

I think it was "love" rather than WATMM, but what the fuck do they know?

indeed!

George, this is the most brilliantly written, creepy thing I have ever read on WATMM. By far.

Actually reading back over it, it kinda makes me cringe, the thought of a pin sharp foot-long needle, being inserted through the hole of the ear and pushed right through to the otherside.

I'm not even sure if it would kill your straight off, it'd kill you eventually but fuck, yeah it's pretty dark to think about.

Thanks!

Wasn't that also a Beatles tune?

"...please don't wake me, no don't shake me, leave me where I am, I'm dead and not just sleeping..."

Great song, very universal message.

W0rd!

it's possible they're cutting off access by dns, and some sites are still cached.

in that case, you just need to change your dns server.

google runs a free dns server you can use. here's a cut/paste of their instructions

well i made it through the night...or this is actually the android clone of me etc etc...

tried changing the dns servers but i still got the walled-garden message. forgive me if i misunderstand the cache but isnt it just a collection of web info youve already downloaded? wouldnt seem to make sense to me that I'm still able to post here or make searches on wikipedia. thanks for your help though! much appreciated and cool to know that google has public dns.

at least i still have watmm ::swoon::

What chaos means is that the ip addresses for some websites are still stored on your computer or their router, meaning that it knows forum.watmm.com is actually 69.164.209.211, and www.wikipedia.com is 208.80.152.2 without having to check with the domain name servers. If you go into your hosts file (windows\system32\drivers\etc\) you can manually add more entries to that list (it's also a good way of knowing if your 'puter has been fooked with malware and its routing some sites to unscrupulous ip addresses) .

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

i see...so would I need to change the dns servers on their router? this cant do. I already tried to forward some ports but the pass is not the default for that brand of router. nevertheless I'm interested in having a look at my host files. any idea where they would be located for mac?

wtf there's more to the internet than watmm? *headasplodes*

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

Not necessarily, as I said altering the hosts file on your machine means that you don't have to use their DNS servers. It's a bit of a faff, but as you're stealing internets anyways it's to be expected.

According to wikipedia - on a mac the hosts file is stored in /private/etc/hosts , there's a guide (taken from http://decoding.wordpress.com/2009/04/06/how-to-edit-the-hosts-file-in-mac-os-x-leopard/ here):

or shift-command-G in FInder

type /private/etc

open "hosts" with TextEdit
