analogue solutions tereshkova

Recommended Posts

i'm presently knocking together a few videos for analogue solutions - firstly for the tereshkova / vostok. was shooting with one all day saturday, and had a little jam session with it which i've briefly assembled to share.

the full video is going to go over specs, etc. but my aim was to show how something like this can do more than just make wierd modular bleeps, etc.

this thing sounds fucking sick. i can't get one soon enough.

i'm curious, though what you guys think of this video (particularly compared to other sound demos for modular stuff) - not so much the shooting or anything, but the idea... do you find it interesting to hear a modular system doing something other than just bleepy subotnickisms?

i'm asking because i'm trying to put together some great marketing stuff for AS, and want to see if you find hearing this stuff and seeing it done on the system inspiring in a makes-you-want-to-steal-one kind of way, or if it's just "meh".

there's nothing remarkable about the patch, but it's just designed to show off how this thing has balls.

it gets a little noodly, but i can't get over how ridiculously great this thing sounds.

sick vid dude. personally i would have loved to see you take it one step further, rather than just demoing it in a musical context as opposed to noises, it'd be cool to hear it in the context of an entire piece. make a few different patterns, throw a drum machine or two in there, have it be the focus, but have it complimented by a few other aspects to keep it really interesting. do that and you've got me sold on the idea.

just my thoughts though.

it's funny you mention that... the plan right now is to do a kinda quasi-cheezy cold-war spy swap type intro with blade runner overtones, and to "score" the whole video with only the tereshkova.

this was literally just me flipping the camera on again because i got some cool tones out of it.

my aim is to show how this thing is insanely versatile.

being monophonic is difficult for anything too terribly lush, but as far as analogues-in-a-box go, this thing is absolutely ridiculously awesome.

i think the film quality is fantastic, looks and sounds much better than 99% of modular demos i've seen on the internet. One criticism is that like a lot of other modular videos this doesn't really show me anything that would justify spending the amount of the price tag. I feel like more people should make modular synth videos that actually show them quickly building a patch (can be edited of course, it would be boring if we watched a guy patch the whole time) and then half way through making a simple but distinct sounding alteration to the patch. Not much in this video is convincing me why i can't do this with a very low end subtractive synthesizer. props to Analog Solutions for hiring you to make videos for them, it's about time more modular companies make flashy looking demos like this

definitely a different approach than what i was thinking but yes i think this would be good too for the more traditional music maker, for sound designers i think you ought to show some kind of patch building demo just to illustrate how tweakable this monster can be

i actually spent most of the day filming antonio from noisebug deconstructing (or at least explaining) a fairly simple patch he set up. we also attached a doepfer keyboard to show how it's playable as an instrument as well. i even had him demonstrate the sound of the raw oscillator outputs for each wavetype, as well as the sub osc outs. the nature of modulars makes it difficult to say "this is for _____" because really anything does anything - the possibilities are kinda endless.

my aim is exactly what you're talking about - to show more versatility.

i'm actually doing these for tom for free... i figured i'm getting to play with the gear and hopefully help him out. but if there's specific stuff you guys want to see, that helps me craft more interesting videos too. so thanks for the feedback!

very much looking forward to seeing the rest! it's pretty refreshing to see someone with the skills you have doing modular stuff. So many years have passed where companies like Wiard, Blacet and countless others have had 64kbps mp3s of basically garbage to listen to as examples. Being a modular synth buyer for many years was pretty much blind shopping unless you knew someone else who had one.

the analogue solutions stuff i'm doing just for free for tom. i contacted him purely because i was frustrated by not seeing the kind of videos i'd like to see. so i figured i'd offer to make them.

been working with noisebug to actually make it happen, though, and talking to them will likely lead to more of this kind of thing.

shot that on the 5dII with a nice vintage SMC takumar 50mm 1.4. at least i'm pretty sure that was the lens i had on at the time.

going back to noisebug this weekend to finish filming stuff for this, and will hopefully have a finished product shortly. i'm taking a lot of the feedback here to heart, and will be spending some additional time getting more diversity out of the unit... playing back a MIDI sequence from logic, for example. more to come.

great idea, let us know when you make more videos.
