In 1990 I was listening to college radio.

You'd hear some shit and call up and ask what it was and then go buy the cassette.

I recorded the radio onto cassette until about 1993, when I stopped buying cassettes and started buying CDs.

Also, a lot of artists cater to their fans to some extent, consciously or unconsciously, so the more fans they have, the wider an audience they have to cater to. This can contribute to the degradation of a artist's original sound.
