like my roommate. he likes some... well, i'd consider it "terrible" music. mostly pop punk and 90s radio rock.

his reactions to some of the stuff i listen to can be pretty funny. like the other day, i was listening to SND, and he walks in, stares at me for a second, and says

"this is music, right?"

"uh, yeah!"

"okay, good. just checking."

and walks off.

or just now, i was listening to ital tek and an arpeggiated square wave piped up pretty prominently in the mix and he basically yelled out "THEY STOLE THAT FROM A NINTENDO!" yeah.

anyone get reactions like that from friends and loved ones?

my brother used to hate everything i listened to and gave me tons of shit for it (he listens to top 40 rap haha) until i caught him when he was rolling and played luke vibert's "yoseph" for him. he still probably wouldn't listen to anything i like sober but he sees where i'm coming from at least.

and messaien i'm assuming that's sarcasm, but i've not seen a thread on it since i've been here? aside from maybe that "lol playing idm when girls are around" thread which i avoided because jesus christ what a dumb thread.

i played this too my girlfriend and she was wondering why such a talented artist would waste his music on a stupid name.

to be fair, it's an INCREDIBLY stupid name, but the music's just too damn good to let that get in the way.

a friend played a cd of stuff i had made and his girlfriend walked in and said his name in a drawn out, irritated, disapproving voice. on another occasion, another friend decided to play something i made and his roommate walked in and asked "is the CD skipping?" and for my latest unbumped effort in EKT/YLC i remember a "oh jeez, 7mins?" at about 1 min in.

as for established acts, the reaction is generally the same, but less heart breaking.

sophomore year of high school, i was at a pool party. the chick that hosted it was ok, she let me put music on. i put on "gym tonic" by bob sinclar, typical french house tune if you don't know it. immediately, two chicks start complaining that it sounds creepy. seriously, wtf. it made me realize that i shouldn't try to share electronic music with anyone, because they're too satisfied with miley cyrus and rihanna to give a shit.

i tried DJ'ing in an irish pub once in the early 00's that would usually just have 'the poges' (sp) on rotation. But it was filled with english and dutch backbackers some of whom i knew. So i hopefully started with some dancy mike p, then had to whittle it back to something more mainstream but still dance music based and the spiral continued until i had to ring my sister up to drive down with some RnB CDs (which were still too fucking out there for these people !!). At least i got some free pints, even if i had to check a nights worth of dignity at the door.

The main problem really was the bellicose groans from the females in the room at something outside of their comfort zone. I really don't think we would have gotten very far as a species were it all left to women to call the shots.

I don't think we should complain about those kinds of reactions because... we all had it.

I started listening to idm through aphex twin, which, at the time, was on a mp3 cd i had gotten from my cousin. Each time '26 mixes for cash'would start playing I was tempted to skip the album. That's what happened most of time, but once I decide listen to it properly and started liking.

If you play some advanced idm to someone, don't expect him to like it is, i think, a good moto.

a friend of mine pleaded with me to shut off Mouse on Mars in my car once, but I wouldn't do it. they're good driving music, especially the album I was listening to, Radical Connector. she probably just wanted to listen to Sum 41 or something anyway.

my girlfriend generally categorizes my listening as "thumpy electronica, disco, and funk", though when i pointed out i've had the tendency to gear my listening habits towards ambient and soundscape types of works, she then said "oh yes, the stuff that sounds like an orchestra tuning up".

fully 3 or 4 friends of mine share a taste in the musics, but they're all over: one friend is heavily into disco, funk, and old soul, another into dubstep and more experimental electronic, etc etc... so it's a person to person type of thing.

I was sitting in class last year, and my mate walked up to me

"Hey, what are you listening to?".

"Aphex Twin."

"Can I have a listen?"

"Sure"

The worst comment I've ever gotten on my music taste was "Mate, why don't you listen to something normal?". I hated him for saying that.
