Berk
if you have 800 dollars to spend and want to make acid per se, I would buy a x0xb0x and a 606 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Berk's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/59250-looking-for-a-machine/#findComment-1405435 Share on other sites
BCM
$800 Australian? what's that about £300ish? er, you could look for second hand x0xb0x's, though you'll be hard pushed to find one quite that cheap.... don't go for an electribe or similar, I've always been disappointed with the acid sounds on them. look, all "acid" is any bass noise sequenced in the right way (ie slide, accent etc) and usually modulated with cutoff, resonance and the like. therefore you can get fantastic "acid" from pretty much anything if you sequence it right. to that end, perhaps look at the MFB synthlite II or their new yellow one (forgotten what it's called) - analogue squelch at knock down prices! for the sequencing side of things, get five12 numerology and hook it up to your chosen acid producer via midi. edit: apparently $800 Australian is closer to £460 in which case you could get a ready built x0xb0x or a second hand future retro revolution which are about the best hardware 303 clones there are.... but fuck the traditional "303" sound, go for something else.... Guest cult fiction
To me, the most critical part of acid isn't the drums, it's the 303... seems like it's too late but I would invest in something like the Future Retro Revolution, which has a very nice sound and goes for $750 new. noise
get a cheap sampler thing, maybe a roland mc303, and a roland poly or mono. the alpha junos are cool. maybe a rack synth if you're limited on space. if you wanna be all analorghhuhhh, get a mc202, a 707 and a cheap polysynth. dunno how much they are these days, but surely you can get that shit for about 800-1000~ usd total? also don't get the futureretro shit. healthy advice. the x0xb0x is nice though. Berk
the classical 303 sound is arguably getting boring (I never liked those classic acid tracks from the late 80s), but it's the sequencing (and the effects) that it's all about with those machines imo. you can make it sound boring or you can make it sound interesting. also, x0xb0xes can be easily modded to make drastic changes for the tonal possibilities, I want to add a second VCO or a subosc some time. but yeah, it's very true that you can make acid with loads of synths!
